Projects Abroad is a fantastic company that allowed me and 5 other medical students to do a placement at Mount Meru hospital in Arusha. Arusha is a great city for volunteers, with lots of Tanzania's tourist attractions nearby, and lots of other volunteers living in the city. The homestay arrangements were fantastic (Kilipilli homestay) and the staff at Projects Abroad go above and beyond. Prior to applying to and beginning training to become a physician assistant, I knew I wanted to find a unique way to garner healthcare experience hours. I had heard great things about Tanzania, had never been to Africa, and love to travel, so the experience aligned perfectly with what I desired. I was unable to study abroad during college, so I felt that this was a great way to combine travel with invaluable experience that would aid me in graduate school.
