LPTM is initiating and promoting the reforestation of Bitti trees (Vitex cofassus) in the Regency of Bulukumba, South Sulawesi, Indonesia. A native species, Bitti is one of the main materials in building Pinisi, a traditional wooden boat. The ever-increasing demand for these boats has rapidly depleted the population of Bitti trees. Apart from preserving wood for future boat building, the Bitti reforestation project has a significant meaning in maintaining the habitat of several wildlife in the area. Two species, deer and monkeys, are now identified as endangered because of poor habitat.
