NUEVA CREACIÓN COMMUNITY VOLUNTEER PROJECT (Mexico)

Lomas del Valle, located near Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, is an aboriginal community home to the Huichol Native American people. The community primarily relies on employment in tobacco fields, which negatively impacts their health and income. They also face poverty and high levels of familial stressors, such as alcoholism and abuse. Over the past 40 years, the government has unsuccessfully attempted to establish a church and state-run schools in the village. The current school, Nueva Creación, is entirely run by the community without government support.
