The authentic Sri Lankan experience

December 08, 2024by: Jacqueline Reichmuth - SwitzerlandProgram: Volunteering for Donkey Lovers

Mannar is not yet flooded with tourists, as are other places in Sri Lanka. I had a beautiful week volunteering and spending time with my favourite animals (Mannar probably is one of the few places in this world where donkey roam freely, thus a small heaven for me!) The host family are people with very warm and kind hearts. They started this project because they felt compassion with all the hurt and sick wild donkeys and are deeply engaged in running it under difficult circumstances (the project is not funded by any NGO anymore but solely by direct donations). I was invited to either stay with them at their house or on the project site (there is only one room there, so you will be alone and have your privacy. Also, a kitchen is available for cooking). The project is situated in a calm spot: I took a tuk-tuk or borrowed one of their bycicles to explore the area (they also have a scooter that you can borrow). It was lovely to do so many different things there (tend to the donkeys, teach English, repair sewing machines, play with the boys of the host family, brainstorm over new ideas how to develop the project,...) and yet do everything at a slow pace, with time to rest and enjoy. Thank you, family Alhathir, for this beautiful experience!
