English Teaching to College Students in Ho Chi Minh, Vietnam

The program takes place at Saigontourist Hospitality College in the city of Ho Chi Minh. The college in question was founded in 1989, initially established as a Basic Tourism and Hospitality School. This institution is a post-secondary institution that seeks to provide students with hands–on training in the hospitality and tourism industry. You may also teach a few classes a day, each class runs a total of one hour and 15 minutes, and will be led by a head participant mentor (everyone will get a chance to lead the lesson) with the support of local teachers. Students are aged around 16-26 years old. During each session, the lead mentor will spend 10 minutes getting to know students and introducing themselves at the beginning of every class, and previewing the lesson of the day. Thereafter, students will be divided into small groups, whereby each participant will mentor one group. Meanwhile, to ensure success, you will need to discuss with a local teacher before your class and prepare games using the teaching manual provided, in collaboration with other participants.

Expedition in Vietnam

Hoi An draws visitors to its lovingly preserved mix of Vietnamese, Chinese, Japanese, and French architecture – evidence of the town's fascinating past as a major trading port. Hoi An's quarter features traditional shophouses, the facades of which are made from carved ironwood. The officially Socialist government, run by the Communist party, has made recent reforms that open the economy for trade and some building wealth. Volunteers will see, however, that the old and new Revolutions have left many rural peasants behind in their idealism of minimum living standards. Our projects help these people. Volunteers, depending on the number of participants per group, engage in a variety of projects: - teaching English pronunciation and colloquialisms - building playgrounds and better homes to replace substandard housing - refurbishing buildings for use as schools - working on kindergarten and primary schools - improving village markets and other infrastructure All these help to raise the standards of living throughout rural Vietnam. Kindergartens are not currently funded by the Vietnamese government, so assistance is needed to maintain and improve schools.

English Teaching Volunteer Project in Vietnam

For volunteers who apply through Friends For Asia's English teaching placements, Hanoi opens itself in new and exciting ways. The English teaching volunteer project offers a candid view of daily life in Vietnam. Volunteers will enjoy an inside perspective on a side of this country that tourists rarely encounter. Volunteer English teachers on this project are a world away from the tour buses, touts and scams that plague the tourist trail. Even the daily commute is worth talking about, carrying volunteers through some of Hanoi's most authentic neighborhoods. This project presents fantastic opportunities to hang out with locals, visit rural temple fairs, and take part in cultural community events, but it also demands flexibility, patience, and a strong sense of independence. Volunteers will be paired with a Vietnamese teacher and have the option of going into class with this person and simply helping out with daily lessons. However, for anyone with the confidence and the drive to do their own lesson planning, nothing is quite as rewarding as leading a class. The time volunteers spend in class depends on the school's needs, as well as the time of year. Generally, volunteers will be in front of students anywhere from 10 to 20 hours per week. Volunteers with plenty of ambition can donate more time planning and possibly helping out with projects at school.

A life changing experience

December 13, 2025by: Irene Neal - CanadaProgram: Worlds #1 Volunteer Programs. 40+ Countries from $20/day!

I was looking for an escape from my comfortable lifestyle at home in Canada. I wanted to share my passion helping others less fortunate than myself. I searched international volunteering programs, have volunteered in four countries in 2025, and can truly say these experiences have changed my life. How do you feel when an elderly person in a old people's home in Zambia begs you to stay with them and share stories and smiles? What happens to you when the school children in Ghana hug you so tight you lose your breath? What overtakes your mind when you introduce positive ideas to women in an impoverished village in Sri Lanka, and see them take possession of new personal empowerment? Let me tell you. It grabs you by the heart and nourishes your soul. It makes you want to come back again and again. Which is exactly what I plan to do in 2026.
