You will work with local schools, teaching children to swim, dive and snorkel responsibly. This project has been so successful in its work that the Thai government and environmental agencies have used data gathered to make policy decisions. The program includes diver Scuba Schools International (SSI) training from beginner to advanced level. Conservation Diver certifications can also be included, depending on the duration of your placement. We welcome volunteers with a range of skills. The most important is the ability to swim a minimum of 2 lengths of a 25-meter swimming pool. You must also love water and be interested in sea life. You must also have a moderate level of fitness as everyone will be required to carry tanks and equipment.

Thailand, whose name means 'Land of the Free,' is an ancient kingdom that holds the rare distinction of never having been colonized by another nation. Known as Siam until 1939, the country continues to maintain a symbolic monarchy that is held in high reverence. Thailand also prides itself on being a welcoming place for tourists, making it a highly popular country to visit. Despite its many attractive features, there is a significant need for decent shelter, as many families cannot afford to improve their homes using conventional builders and bank financing. Numerous families reside in very basic and inadequate structures made of Teak wood but aspire to have more adequate and modern houses. We are partnering with families in the city of Lampang in northern Thailand to offer them an opportunity to realize their dreams. Participants will have the unique opportunity to work alongside the homeowners and other locals. In addition to providing safe housing, these trips provide locals with jobs, support the local economy, and create a life-changing experience for everyone involved.

Applicants who sign up for volunteer projects through Friends for Asia are understandably eager to join a project through which they can really make a difference. By working with a small group of children who have been abused, neglected or outright orphaned, volunteers are able to maximize their impact while in the country.
