If you're interested in food security and organic farming, this internship opportunity is made for you! Be a part of a nonprofit organization that concentrates on ensuring access to safe, nutritious, and affordable organic food for South African kids. They primarily work in school gardens growing organic food; by doing this, they are promoting healthy eating, self-sufficiency, and natural food-growing methods to the children and faculty. Therefore, as a Food Security intern you’ll be helping develop ways for the schools to optimize the products they receive from their on-site edible garden. You’ll take on different roles during this internship such as assisting in growing the food in the gardens, as well as facilitating and developing eco-education workshops, which teach both students and teachers about organic gardening, fresh food, and nutrition. Experience Durban, the heart of Kwa-Zulu Natal province in South Africa. Child Family Health International is proud to have operated this excellent program in collaboration with many health care providers and public health projects in the Durban area since January of 2006. The Durban program highlights the challenges faced by the post-apartheid public health care system taking into consideration the threats of HIV/AIDS, environmental health issues, and other underlying causes of poor health in the region. The program will focus on health issues addressed through clinical interventions and community development projects in health. This program combines service-learning opportunities in public health and clinical settings. This site will focus on learning about public health issues in the region in a mostly observational manner and participating, in a limited way in the provision of health care at clinical facilities.

Education is one of the key needs of children, as this is their doorway to a bright future. In South Africa, kids have to go to school because it is seen as a fundamental human right, yet a significant percentage struggle to attend or do well at school due to various reasons, such as unemployment, HIV/AIDS, poverty, and substance abuse. Hence, this education project from All Out Africa aims to assist primary school children in various ways, including helping them learn to read and providing one-on-one support to those performing below the 20% pass rate. Volunteers will also work on an after-school project that continues to support educational activities, including reading and homework, as well as teach life skills and activities to improve self-confidence. Participants don’t need prior experience to volunteer in this project. What’s important is motivation and sensitivity to each child’s needs. The organization will help them settle into a role that benefits the children they work with while they gain valuable skills themselves. Participants can choose whether they prefer a teaching role at a local primary school or a childcare role at a preschool or nursery.

Over 80% of South African 10-year-olds struggle to read for meaning, indicating a serious literacy crisis. After-school academic support programs have proven effective in improving educational outcomes, especially in under-resourced communities. These programs help reduce educational inequality by offering academic and psychosocial support, and by creating safe, nurturing spaces for vulnerable children and youth. Hope Warriors Children’s Charity provides an inspirational learning environment in Soshanguve, where children receive free homework help and academic enrichment. Activities include reading aloud, mental math, and Spelling Bee competitions to build confidence and skills. We encourage children to stay focused on their studies, living out Nelson Mandela’s belief that "Education is the most powerful weapon you can use to change the world." To support learning, we also provide meals and proper clothing, helping children who face hunger and poor nutrition to concentrate better and engage more actively in school life.
