Each day, about 2,000 kilograms of food is wasted in Portugal. Volunteers on this inspiring project travel around Lisbon visiting supermarkets, cafes, bars, and restaurants to collect unwanted or unused food. This food is then distributed to some of the city's poorest inhabitants. Volunteers help with food collection, preparing the food for distribution and giving it to the people who most need it. Not only does this project do amazing things for sustainability, but it also goes a long way to helping people in need. Volunteers can take part for one week to 12 weeks. Volunteers live in an eco-guesthouse in Lisbon with other volunteers. Three meals per day are provided.

Make a direct impact by joining a local non-profit that provides nutritious meals to individuals and families facing food insecurity. As a volunteer, you’ll help create a safe, welcoming space where each meal supports dignity, health, and hope for a more stable future. You’ll take part in daily tasks that directly support meal service operations: • Prepare and cook meals that are both nutritious and aligned with healthy eating goals for vulnerable communities. • Maintain kitchen hygiene and organization to ensure a clean, safe, and efficient food preparation environment. • Assist with meal distribution, including packaging, serving, and coordinating deliveries so food reaches those who need it most. This hands-on experience allows you to contribute meaningfully to a cause that addresses one of the most basic human needs—access to food—while gaining insight into local social challenges and community solutions.
