Volunteer Programs in Kathmandu, Nepal

A magnificent journey awaits you in the valley of the Himalayas. Nepal’s capital and largest city is a pristinely located metropolitan area with stunningly beautiful natural surroundings and a vibrant, highly spiritual local culture. Sitting high in the mountains, Kathmandu is also isolated from much of the developed world and lacks many infrastructural advancements that outsiders may take for granted. Volunteering in Kathmandu in areas such as education, environmental preservation, and healthcare will provide valuable services to the city while allowing volunteers to broaden their perspective of life itself.

School Renovation in Kathmandu, Nepal

Children need a safe and solid learning environment equipped with adequate facilities and resources. This impactful program operates in a primary school on the outskirts of enchanting Kathmandu, near Bhaktapur and close to one of the city's largest slum areas. The school offers free education, textbooks, uniforms, and shoes to over 150 children living in poverty, whose parents would otherwise be unable to afford schooling. Unfortunately, the school suffers significantly from underfunding, and maintaining operations is a daily challenge. It doesn’t have enough classrooms, and the teaching materials are substandard, compromising the quality of education these children receive. To address these challenges, the program supplies international volunteers who repair and maintain facilities, which the school could not otherwise afford. These volunteers are crucial in helping the school continue to meet the educational needs of children by providing safe and supportive learning environments.

Depending on the needs on the ground at any given time, you will work alongside community members to help deliver basic needs such as water security initiatives or renovating schools to establish suitable learning environments. Water security: Unsafe drinking water and unhygienic sanitation practices can cause widespread health problems in the community. You may be involved in building rainwater harvesting tanks. School renovation: Schools throughout Nepal are often extremely basic, and you will help make them more effective as learning environments.

Medical Experience in Nepal with Projects Abroad

Participating in a Medicine & Healthcare Internship in Nepal is a unique experience, wherein you will learn from some of the most skilled practitioners in the country. Internships in Nepal are based in and around Kathmandu and in the region of Chitwan. The facilities are generally quite basic when compared to facilities in the West. You will intern on social and health development projects focusing on providing medicine and healthcare to the underprivileged. This is a particularly important service in a country such as Nepal where the National Health System provides for only 21 percent of the population. Interns work at a variety of placements in hospitals and rehabilitation centers for children with disabilities in the Kathmandu Valley. This can involve a unique combination of working with doctors and being involved with care activities and is particularly relevant for those who wish to specialize in pediatrics. Some of our placements are leading referral centers for the functional mobility of children with physical disabilities. Most of the cases are neglected orthopedic conditions such as tuberculosis, polio, post-burn contractures, and cerebral palsy.

Woman's Empowerment & Education in Nepal

During the first week of this program, you will take part in a mandatory culture week designed to help you understand local customs—an essential foundation when working with vulnerable communities. Many women in Nepal leave rural areas to seek employment in cities, hoping to improve life for their families. Often, they have little or no formal education and work as housemaids, making it difficult to access better job opportunities in a society where education—especially in English—is crucial for advancement. You will play a key role in expanding their opportunities through structured English lessons and everyday conversation. All higher education in Nepal is conducted in English, making your teaching especially valuable. A trained teacher will support you in planning your lessons, with a focus on inspiring women of all ages and helping them rediscover their strengths. You will teach groups with varying educational backgrounds, using a provided course book as a guide, particularly helpful for first-time educators. Creative methods are encouraged to make learning engaging and meaningful.

Find Nirvana While Volunteering in Nepal

Globe Aware's Nepal program is based in the lush valley of Chitwan, 60 miles outside of Kathmandu. This is a region where traditional mountain life and a variety of exotic wildlife reign. Your fully packed schedule will have you working three full days on either or both of these projects. Teaching As a volunteer, you can work in a school developed to provide free or near-to-free education to children below the poverty line. Help teach subjects like English, Art, Music, and more. You can also provide tutoring to students with learning difficulties, helping them learn essential problem-solving skills and build their confidence by playing sports and games. Renovation You can focus on renovating old homes, which are falling apart and in desperate need of repairs, and building hygiene stations. Many of these homes belong to families with low incomes and are unable to afford the repairs themselves. In 2015, Nepal experienced a 7.8-magnitude earthquake. Aftershocks are followed by another earthquake just days after. These disasters left many people homeless or with homes badly in need of repair.

Children’s Development Program

The basic need for a children's development program stems from the following facts about Nepal. Nepal is one of the poorest countries in the world, with approximately 25% of its population living below the poverty line. Therefore, the fundamental rights of many community children are often not met. Most children in rural communities aged 3 to 5 lack access to quality education. Approximately 5% of children never attend school. The children who attend school often drop out before completing high school. Only 46.2% of children complete their high school education. They instead help at home, support household chores, and babysit while their parents work on the farm. 37.4% of children aged 5 to 17 are involved in agricultural labor, with a significant proportion working on their family farms. 26.3% of children aged 10 to 18 are married or in a union with their partner. So, the children’s development is not well in place.

Volunteer Nepal - School and Community Maintenance Project

Contribute to a School and Community Maintenance Project that offers a unique taste of Nepal life and the opportunity to make a real difference in people's lives at a community level. Friend’s for Asia's most varied project, the program gets participants involved with all kinds of tasks to help enrich and improve the lives of locals. Nepal remains one of the poorest countries in the world. Schools and other community facilities, where they exist, are basic and often in need of repair. Our Nepal volunteers work closely with teachers, local families and community leaders in Kathmandu or Chitwan to repair and maintain schools and other buildings. Volunteering in Nepal - A Day In The Life Daily life in this project revolves around the routines of your host family, providing a unique experience that no tour operator can offer. Nepali families typically rise early. Breakfast is taken with the family before volunteers head out for their day's work. There is no such thing as a typical day in this project, with tasks ranging from painting walls to fixing leaky taps. Evenings are typically spent with the family who will often be joined by visitors to share the evening meal.

Volunteer Abroad in Nepal | United Planet

Volunteers in Nepal immerse themselves in a vibrant culture. Most famous for Mt. Everest, the country captures hearts because of its people and customs. The Nepalese are known for cooking hearty, flavorful meals and greeting others with "Namaste." While tourism is booming, Nepal still remains one of the poorest countries. Volunteers mostly work in rural communities. Volunteers in Nepal can be caregivers at child care centers, teaching assistants at schools, and counselors for women and girls victimized by human trafficking.

A Guide to Volunteering Abroad in Kathmandu

Projects & Placements

Many volunteer placements in Kathmandu are focused on various areas of community development. Potential participants who are interested in health care, urban planning, social rights, sustainability, education, and the like will find no shortage of openings with local volunteer organizations and NGOs. Different volunteer programs in Nepal will likely have you working both in city limits of Kathmandu, and in nearby villages which lack access to many vital resources.

Beyond social and community services, volunteer work in Kathmandu in the areas of environmental and wildlife preservation is also quite popular. The Himalayas are a rich and wondrous natural habitat, and many local organizations are devoted to the preservation of its lush forests and tremendous diversity of animal species in the face of increasing industrial expansion. If your interests lay in eco-conservation and animal work, then there is hardly a more picturesque and abundant environment on the face of the earth to get involved in than the majestic natural surroundings of Kathmandu.

Most opportunities for volunteering in Kathmandu are offered year round. Kathmandu counter-intuitively enjoys a fairly mild climate year round compared to other regions of Nepal, making any time of the year opportune for volunteer programs. While winters do not get to be exceedingly cold, summers can be quite hot and humid, followed by the rainy monsoon season. Whenever you volunteer in Kathmandu, do not overpack because many commodities are available to purchase very inexpensively in the city.

A life changing experience

December 13, 2025by: Irene Neal - CanadaProgram: Worlds #1 Volunteer Programs. 40+ Countries from $20/day!
9

I was looking for an escape from my comfortable lifestyle at home in Canada. I wanted to share my passion helping others less fortunate than myself. I searched international volunteering programs, have volunteered in four countries in 2025, and can truly say these experiences have changed my life. How do you feel when an elderly person in a old people's home in Zambia begs you to stay with them and share stories and smiles? What happens to you when the school children in Ghana hug you so tight you lose your breath? What overtakes your mind when you introduce positive ideas to women in an impoverished village in Sri Lanka, and see them take possession of new personal empowerment? Let me tell you. It grabs you by the heart and nourishes your soul. It makes you want to come back again and again. Which is exactly what I plan to do in 2026.
