Global Health in Oaxaca, Mexico

Program formerly known as "Cultural Crossroads in Health in Oaxaca, Mexico." Oaxaca, where CFHI students can explore a different culture and way of life while learning about the region's healthcare system through clinical rotations, is truly a crossroads where different cultures and healthcare practices intersect. Oaxaca City, one of the most unique cities in Mexico, is steeped in history, tradition, and the influences of a vibrant indigenous culture. Students will be immersed in the region's language and rich culture while learning about contemporary social issues facing the local population. Oaxaca is one of the poorest states in Mexico, and many of its inhabitants, especially those of the large indigenous population in rural areas, have limited access to even rudimentary healthcare services. Participants will be exposed to various elements of Oaxacan healthcare: public and private, urban and rural.

Healthcare and Medical Program in Mexico

This project was created to provide essential healthcare services to vulnerable residents in one of the poorest regions of Mexico. It enables medical students, nurses, paramedics, and semi-qualified medical practitioners to volunteer in local hospitals and clinics in and around Oaxaca—a historic, inland city nestled in beautiful mountains. The level of direct involvement and patient care depends on the volunteer’s knowledge and training. In some cases, suitably trained and experienced participants may be more hands-on, helping fulfill a huge need in a region where there are often insufficient numbers of medical staff. Junior medical and pre-med students will find this project to be mainly observational, an excellent opportunity to gain firsthand insight into Mexico's healthcare system. Local hospitals and clinics in and around Oaxaca are in dire need of medical and administrative support, with the knowledge, skills, and abilities of volunteers put to good use. Their participation makes a truly positive impact on the lives of those who need it most.

A Month of Medicine, Culture, and Connection - BEAUTY OF OAXACA !

Spending a month in Oaxaca was more than just a medical experience—it was an immersion into a healthcare system deeply intertwined with culture, resourcefulness, and community. Shadowing physicians in clinics and hospitals, I saw firsthand how providers balanced modern medicine with traditional healing, where resources were scarce but compassion was abundant. I witnessed systemic health challenges firsthand—patients traveling hours for medical attention, hospitals working with limited supplies, and families playing a crucial role in their loved ones’ care. This experience taught me that medicine is not just about treating illness but about understanding the patient’s beliefs, environment, and access to care. Outside of the clinical setting, Oaxaca’s rich culture embraced me—dancing in the streets during festivals, tasting mole in a bustling mercado, and connecting with local healthcare teams who welcomed me as one of their own. This experience reinforced that medicine is universal, but healing is deeply personal, shaped by history, tradition, and human connection.
