This program offers you a unique opportunity to contribute to animal welfare and social causes in Malta. It enables you to combine social commitment with English-speaking practice and provides the chance to explore Malta with its warm hospitality and beauty. You will work with a local NGO from one of three categories: Charity and Community Service, Charity Shops/Thrift Stores, or an Animal Shelter. Just let us know which category resonates with you the most! The community service involves a wide range of potential activities, such as working at food banks, supporting shelters for homeless individuals, or organizing small events. At the charity shops, you might encounter tasks such as sorting through donations, assisting customers, managing inventory, or displaying products. Finally, at the animal shelter, the work encompasses feeding, cleaning, exercising animals, and more. You may also help with administrative tasks, fundraising, or event planning. In Malta, you can organize your accommodation, or we can do it for you. You can also combine your volunteering with English lessons. This way, we offer you the flexibility to customize your stay to your exact needs.
Project Manaia - Marine Research Expeditions

Do you want to be part of an international crew aboard and help with data collection underwater? We will teach you the necessary skillset for habitat mapping, species Identification and mapping of their distribution, and spotting Marine Megafauna, such as dolphins, whales, and turtles. As a volunteer aboard, you will be a part of the research team, which means snorkeling, measuring seagrass meadows, looking for species, taking pictures and videos of all the different organisms you see, and learning to identify them! While sailing, you will also be standing watches—spotting whales and dolphins and trying to take the best possible pictures of them for Photo Identification with our partner organizations. You will be living aboard a 21m sailing boat with up to 9 more people, giving everyone enough space to find a quiet corner when needed but also enough social areas to live and work together. During your stay, we generally move every other day for a 4-5 hour sail to the next location, which gives us enough time to map and check the underwater world in each location properly and have a look onshore as well if wanted.
A Guide to Volunteering Abroad in Malta
Locations
While the island archipelago of Malta encompasses a total land area of just 122 square miles, it is also home to nearly 450,000 citizens, making it both one of the smallest and one of the most densely populated countries in the world. Nearly the entire country is covered by one large interconnected urban area, a modern manifestation of Malta’s long legacy as a city-state.
What technically constitutes a “city” in Malta thus remains indefinite, and the word is used commonly simply to refer to regions within this encompassing metropolitan area. Valletta is officially the country’s capital and, along with the surrounding metropolitan area, is home to nearly the entire Maltese population. With a high standard of living and home to several UNESCO World Heritage Sites, Valletta remains a perennially popular destination where to volunteer abroad in Malta.
If you’d prefer to volunteer abroad in Malta within a less bustling and densely populated region, you might also look into smaller towns such as San Gwann. Because the country is so small, you can easily get about from destination to destination in very little time (Malta maintains an extensive bus system which was just recently re-hauled to become more efficient).
