Valparaíso and Viña del Mar are coastal sister cities 68 miles northwest of Santiago. A city of seafaring traditions and grand hilltop views, Valparaíso is known as “the Jewel of the Pacific.” It functions as the primary commercial harbor, naval base, and seat of political power for the country and offers something for everyone, including spectacular beaches, exotic cuisine, and fine architecture. Throughout your stay, participate in an academic program aimed at helping you critically reflect on your experiences in Chile. Through service at a local organization and guided reflection activities, our goal is to help you gain a better understanding of the local language, culture, and community. Each placement is unique, so visit our website to learn more about the specific program options available. We especially recommend our Chilean sites to those interested in working with people who have special needs or in education.

The National Registration Center for Study Abroad offers a Spanish language study program and a variety of volunteering projects in Santiago, Chile. Volunteers spend 20 hours per week in group Spanish classes, learning the four language skills of listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Spanish is the only language of instruction in class. Classes run for about 55 minutes per day. To make sure volunteers get enough progress in the language, they should spend 4-12 weeks in class if they are beginners, and 2-12 weeks if they have intermediate to advanced proficiency. After four weeks in language study, volunteers will then be placed in volunteering positions in communities for another four weeks. Placements are available in the fields of Healthcare, Childcare, Education, Indigenous Community, and Environmental Care.
