Travel to rural Cambodia to assist local schoolteachers and education staff in teaching community health education. This project aims to expand knowledge of health concerns and basic hygiene practices. As a volunteer, prepare and lead class discussions, with topics ranging from proper hygiene to overall body care and health. Other tasks include providing hands-on training and participation in demonstrations of teeth brushing, hand washing, and related preventative measures. A medical background is preferred for this program but not required because you take on tasks based on your pre-existing knowledge of these topics. You can participate no matter your training and education. But the more knowledgeable you are about the topics, the more you can contribute.

Travel to Cambodia and help build houses and sanitation systems for the impoverished neighborhoods of Siem Reap. This internship offers a unique opportunity to learn khmer building techniques, while contributing to an incredible cause. You’ll join an organization addressing the extreme poverty in the Siem Reap province where many live without access to clean drinking water or proper sanitation systems. The main focus of their work is in supplying and constructing proper housing and WASH systems to those without. The organization also runs a community center where education and vocational training programs are held. As an intern, you’ll gain insight into project management while getting involved with construction too. Your days will be spent either on site helping to build wells, khmer-style houses, or fitting solar panels, or at the organization’s main office, assisting with logistical planning and scheduling for projects or liaising with local suppliers and builders.

The Cambodia Clean Water Project saves lives and helps protect livelihoods by giving rural communities access to clean drinking water. In Cambodia, 1 in 7 children dies before the age of five from preventable diseases such as typhoid, malnutrition, malaria, dengue fever, and diarrhea. Dirty water is the common denominator for all of these conditions and the direct cause of many. Moreover, when adults fall victim to such illnesses and are unable to work, it is not long before entire families go without food, and the cost of medicines and treatment can leave a family struggling with debt for years. Volunteers spend days building and installing bio-sand water filters at the project, which are a low-cost way to provide potable water to impoverished areas from any source (i.e. pump wells, pit wells, rivers, ponds). Sand filters are a relatively new technology in Cambodia and are highly effective as they are easy to construct with locally available materials as well as simple to install and maintain.

Volunteers For Peace (a Vermont-based nonprofit) can place you on a team of international volunteers who contribute to a meaningful community service project designed, planned, and hosted by local partners. Work project types vary by country but may include environmental and wildlife conservation, historic preservation, educational and language learning, archaeology, organic farming, and arts and festivals. We also have social services projects, which could involve working with children, the elderly, or refugees. Projects are designed to combine service with recreational activities and cultural exchange – whether by visiting local beaches, learning local dances, meeting local officials, or volunteering with residents at the place you’re visiting. Each project is unique, but all bring people together for the most meaningful travel experience imaginable. Please note that VFP can only place US Citizens. Do more than experience Cambodia in this Globe Aware volunteer program abroad. Make a real, lasting impact on the lives of children and people from village communities by participating in a range of projects. These include repairing homes in indigent areas, assembling wheelchairs, and interacting with students in a local school. Cambodia is one of Southeast Asia’s most fascinating countries. Siem Reap and the Angkor Wat temple complex are among the country’s top tourist draws; however, most Cambodians don’t benefit from the blossoming tourism industry. A large percentage of people still live in poverty and children are in need of attention. With your participation in this volunteer program, you’ll have the opportunity to make a difference in any way you can. The Volunteer Vacation program of Globe Aware is based in Siem Reap. You’ll live in a simple hotel setting together with other participants. Accommodation amenities include running hot water, electricity, and flushing toilets.
