A Guide to Teaching Abroad in Myanmar
Locations
Myanmar is a fairly large country in the heart of southeast Asia, covering 260,000 square miles and home to over 50 million citizens. It has an extensive coastline which runs along the Bay of Bengal and Andaman sea to the south and west, and is bordered to the north and east by India, Bangladesh, China, Laos, and Thailand. Myanmar has been a major regional power for many centuries, most recently gaining independence from British rule in 1948.
Yangon (also known as Rangoon) is the country’s largest city by a considerable margin, and so not surprisingly is one of the most popular destinations where to teach abroad in Myanmar. Sitting pristinely on the country’s southern peninsula, Yangon is home to over 5 million citizens and is the major commercial hub of the country. While there is an impressive amount of ancient and colonial architecture dotting Yangon, the city remains largely impoverished and undeveloped in most areas.
Other popular destinations where to teach abroad in Myanmar include the smaller cities of Mandalay and Bago, as well as many smaller rural areas sprawling throughout the countryside. Myanmar remains a largely unindustrialized nation, so teaching abroad in a village can be a very authentic experience of what life is like for the majority of the country’s population.
