Teach Abroad in Ghana

Ghana offers many teaching opportunities for licensed teachers and English teachers. Apart from teaching jobs, Ghana allows ex-pat teachers to immerse in the culture and explore the noisy and historic streets of the capital, Accra. Although English is Ghana's official language, English teachers are still in high demand as the government works to improve students' overall English literacy skills. Ghana also has a few international schools that follow the American, British, or International Baccalaureate curriculum. These international schools hire licensed teachers from the United States or the United Kingdom. Teachers with advanced degrees can also apply for positions at universities in Ghana across various fields. While most English teaching jobs are offered on a volunteer basis, teachers who opt to teach at international schools can earn a monthly salary of $500, which may cover the cost of living in Ghana. Some international schools in Ghana also provide housing as an added benefit. The academic year in Ghana runs from August or September to June or July. Schools typically post vacancies in May and sometimes in January.

A Guide to Teaching Abroad in Ghana

Locations

Accra, the capital, is the city where you will look the least out of place as the locals are more accustomed to foreigners. Teaching in Accra will be more standardized and the pay will be higher, but so will the cost of living. There may be more schools with open teaching jobs in Accra, but it may also be more difficult to find a gig since it’s a bustling city with more competition.

The smaller city of Cape Coast is just a few hours away and is right on the water. A university is located in Cape Coast, making it a place that caters to education and volunteers who want to teach English in Ghana. You will also find a historical slave castle, several volunteer offices, and easy access to the ocean.

The northern region is almost an entirely different universe from the rest of the country and it is a little more conservative. You will see flatter, browner lands and will be able to visit Mole National Park. In the Volta region, you will discover lush, green spaces and waterfalls, as well as several monkey sanctuaries (yep, you can casually hang out with monkeys).

For your days off, Cape Three Points has the most pristine and untouched beach in Ghana.  You will be isolated on this picturesque coastline and will meet many travelers looking to get away and unwind.

If you teach English in Ghana in rural areas, nearly everyone in the village will know your name and you may be expected to meet with the chief, occasionally. A trip to the market in these areas may cost you a couple dollars for groceries and thirty or so conversations for the time. Having this kind of community support will not only benefit your teaching job but will also enhance your overall daily experience.

Three weeks volunteering in Siem Reap

I spent three weeks volunteering at Salariin Kampuchea Learning Center in Siem Reap, where I helped teach English to younger students and supported the development of their social media presence. It was one of the most enriching experiences I’ve ever had. Some days were more challenging than others—adapting to a new environment and finding ways to communicate across cultures. But what I’ll carry with me, more than anything, is the deep sense of connection I felt with the people. I can confidently say I’ve grown and learned so much, and that’s something I’ll always be grateful for. Living and working within the local community gave me a complete perspective shift. I was struck by their warmth and generosity, and the quiet strength with which they face life. From the very beginning, I felt welcomed. The children, the staff, and my host family made me feel included from the start, making it easy to feel at home throughout my time there
