SIT Study Abroad: Madagascar: Biodiversity & Ntrl. Resource

Explore Madagascar’s rainforests, mangroves, coral reefs, and unique biodiversity, shaped by more than 100 million years of isolation. Recognized as one of the world’s megadiverse countries, the island is home to flora and fauna found nowhere else on earth. Study alongside Malagasy university students, employing social and natural science field techniques in coral reef systems, national parks, and farming and fishing villages. Live with host families, study Malagasy or French, and witness iconic species and landscapes. MONEY MATTERS SIT has given an average of over $1.3 million in scholarships and grants to SIT Study Abroad students in recent years and is committed to ensuring you have the information necessary to apply for such funding. Our program costs include academics, excursions, accommodations, airport transfers, meals, and health insurance. Be sure to discuss how study abroad costs are handled at your school with your study abroad advisor and read the website for more specific information.

An Experiential Summer in Madagascar

September 16, 2025by: Nimotalai Afolabi - United StatesProgram: SIT Study Abroad: Madagascar: Traditional Medicine
9

My trip to Madagascar was unlike anything I had ever experienced. It was challenging, rewarding and fulfilling all at the same time. Unlike other study abroad programs, your time spent in Madagascar will be extremely immersive, and nothing like the usual European study abroad trip your university prepares you for. We travel to different parts of the country, such as rural and more urban/modernized areas so prepare yourself accordingly. There are large scheduled shifts and dietary changes, so ask for help and support in whatever areas you need. Despite all of the challenges I experienced on this trip, it is an enlightening one where you get to have direct contact with the locals to broaden your understanding of traditional medicine, colonial history and cultural legacies. Prepare yourself to learn Malagasy, experience an "African winter" and see Madagascar's rich biodiversity.
