The South Rift Valley of Kenya, stretching from the Maasai Mara National Reserve through Amboseli National Park, is one of the most spectacular wildlife areas on the planet. Earth Expeditions has partnered with the Cincinnati Zoo and Botanical Garden and the African Conservation Centre to advance community-based conservation in this dynamic landscape. This effort builds on the decades-long research of Dr. David Western, former head of the Kenya Wildlife Service, and the centuries-long research of the Maasai pastoralists, who have long co-existed with wildlife in an open grassland ecosystem populated by elephants, lions, giraffes, zebra, wildebeests, and a remarkable diversity of other species. With the rise of nontraditional lifestyles, private ranches, and fenced lands that prevent needed wildlife migrations, communities of the South Rift have recognized the need to understand the impact of these changes and work together for a better future. Before and following the field experience in Kenya, students will complete coursework via Dragonfly Workshops' Web-Based Learning Community as they apply these experiences to their home institutions.

This program is split between Brackenhurst, an eco-campus in Limuru, and the Pardamat Conservation Area in Maasai Mara. The course acquaints students with some of the threats to wildlife and biodiversity in East Africa while exposing them to certain local communities that are paving the way to important solutions. Global climate change phenomena, population growth, and increasing human-wildlife conflict are some of the challenges and threats to wildlife populations we are facing all over the world. These necessitate a re-examination of how we can help protect and preserve some of the world’s most important and diverse ecosystems. This program importantly probes students’ pragmatic problem-solving and field-based skills. In turn and in line with EDU Africa’s Transformative Learning philosophy, the program will encourage and facilitate their holistic growth (in fields of intercultural competence, professional development, global citizenship, personal growth, and intellectual growth) during their time abroad.
A Guide to Studying Abroad in Nairobi
Popular Ways to Study in Nairobi
You know you want to study abroad in the largest city in Kenya, so now it is time to choose a field of study. Think big or think small. Think technical or think outdoorsy. Think long term or short term. Think traditional or non-traditional. No matter what your little heart desires, you will certainly find a study abroad program to meet your needs in Nairobi.
Popular subjects to study. A no-brainer field of study is an intensive language immersion program focused on learning Swahili. If you are going to live and thrive in Kenya, you’re going to need to learn to speak the language. Choose a human and wildlife conservation program if you are interested in the studying sustainable approaches to human-wildlife coexistence, or African studies if you want to understand humans more than animals. Medicine and health sciences are also popular fields of study in Nairobi. The African population has been affected by the HIV/AIDS epidemic for decades — you can see it unfold up close and learn more about how to stop it.
Short term and summer programs vs. long term programs. The long and short of it is that when it comes to duration of study program, you can create pretty much any experience to fulfill your educational needs. Short term (1-4 weeks or Summer) vs. long term (semester or year long) are the common program durations to choose from.
Attending universities vs. other program types. If you are interested in a longer stint abroad, you might consider studying abroad in Nairobi at a university, like the University of Nairobi has 141 Masters programs and 70 Bachelor's programs to choose from. Kenyatta University is similar in size to the University of Nairobi, also offering international student programs. Even so, most students choose to study with organized programs, like any of the ones mentioned on this page. These have the added bonus of including housing, cultural activities, and instant rafikis (friends — not monkeys, sorry).
