Seamester Study Abroad and Gap Year Voyages

Seamester is the educational adventure of a lifetime! For more than 40 years, we have offered unparalleled educational voyages where students spend a semester at sea sailing between islands, countries, and even continents. We design our programs to provide engaging learning experiences with real outcomes in ways that are impossible to replicate in the traditional classroom. Living as part of a close-knit team on an ocean-going vessel, our students learn fundamental lessons beyond academics: teamwork, leadership, and personal responsibility. They receive academic credit from the University of South Florida, along with PADI scuba certifications and IYT sailing certifications. Our programs are designed to inspire students to realize that it’s the journey, not the destination, that matters the most.

A Guide to Studying Abroad in Italy

Prepare to Study Abroad

Set goals

Setting clear goals is key to maximizing your study abroad experience in Italy. To define these goals, consider asking yourself the following questions:

  • What parts of this study abroad are most important and how can I connect more deeply with the material?
  • How can I intentionally become more intertwined with Italy and its culture while I’m there and how can I be an intentional traveler?
  • Am I looking to grow as a human with this new experience and what parts of myself can be pushed and played with while abroad?

Understand the benefits

Studying in Italy provides numerous benefits, including access to high-quality education, cultural immersion, and enriching travel opportunities. These experiences are sure to excite you academically and personally.

  • Italy offers some of the oldest universities with great curriculums and international populations.
  • Does it even have to be mentioned—the culture, food, history, and landscapes are all world-renowned?
  • Italy is a great vantage point to travel to a great number of places both in and out of Europe.
  • The country is generally pretty inexpensive (depending on what you’re interested in) and a budget is easily achievable.

Things to know

Traveling to Italy requires preparation, and studying there is no different. Here's what you need to know to get ready for your journey:

  • Public transportation and deals - Buying package deals for public transportation, sightseeing, and museums can often be cheaper than purchasing individual tickets. It's worth exploring these options to save money.
  • Logistics and safety - Keep all essential documents ready well in advance and create a flexible packing list tailored to the climate and activities you'll be doing.
  • Cost of living and accommodation - Italy's cost of living varies by region, so research and budget accordingly. Many academic programs offer accommodation options, which can simplify the process.
  • Social and cultural etiquette - Learning basic Italian greetings, such as “Ciao,” and familiarizing yourself with customs, like the late dining culture, can help you blend in and respect local traditions.
  • Visa requirements - For extended stays, especially for non-EU students, a visa is typically required. Always check with relevant embassies or your program for the latest requirements.
  • Language - Knowing basic Italian can greatly enhance your experience, both academically and socially, so consider learning key phrases before you go.

Amazing adventure

December 06, 2025by: Elena Hill - United StatesProgram: Experience Veterinary Medicine in Italy's Top Rescues

I had a wonderful time working with a veterinarian in Italy and making so many new friends from around the US and the world! We all became fast friends and took many trips around Italy and Florence during our free time. I was able to go to Sienna as they were setting up for the horse races, I was able to go to the Uffizi gallery, and pisa. I had the most amazing lasagna at trattoria Marione! I was able to learn so much about horses and what goes into their senior care. It was so amazing to work with sanctuaries that respected animals just as I do. It was an unforgettable experience. I wish I could go again!
