The Short Term Study Abroad Programme at the Royal University of Bhutan (RUB) offers international students a chance to discover both Bhutan's unique way of life and its educational system. Lasting one to six weeks, this program pairs RUB with external institutions, welcoming undergraduate and postgraduate students to explore Bhutan's culture and learning environment. Led by their own teachers, students engage in various activities designed to help them better understand Bhutan. Throughout the program, students interact closely with RUB faculty and other students, experiencing different teaching methods and learning from each other's cultures. This not only helps visiting students but also enriches the education of local students. Additionally, the program encourages collaboration between different countries, making the global academic community stronger. With its focus on cultural immersion and academic exploration, the Short Term Study Abroad Programme provides an enriching experience for students from all over the world.

SFS Bhutan: Himalayan Environment and Society in Transition

Deep in the Himalayas, where few foreigners ever step foot, lies Bhutan—a country of vibrant culture, Buddhist philosophy, and diverse ecosystems. Trek through remote villages and high mountain passes to study environmental issues firsthand and learn what the people are doing to maintain biodiversity and traditional rural lifestyles in transition. Hone your field research skills as you design and carry out an extensive research project and conservation and development issues in the country. SFS students will live and study at the Center for Himalayan Environment and Development Studies. The Center is at one end of the stunning Paro Valley, at the base of a towering ridgeline dotted with Buddhist monasteries. The campus is a small cluster of buildings designed in traditional Bhutanese architecture. A pleasant 15-minute walk brings you to the markets, shops, and cultural events of Paro Town.

A Guide to Studying Abroad in Bhutan

Locations

Whether you study abroad in Bhutan in the capital city of Thimphu, a rural field station, or the largest district in Bhutan, Trashigang, the academic and experiential options are plentiful. Royal Thimphu College, based in Bhutan’s capital, offers study abroad courses for general degree programs, ranging from English and Natural Sciences, to Sociology and Economics. Students also have the chance to learn alongside local Bhutanese students during their study abroad program.

Sherubtse College, the first and oldest academic or educational college in Bhutan is located in Kanglung, Trashigang. It’s the largest college in the country and offers classes in several disciplines, including but not limited to: physical and biological science, arts and humanities, and the social sciences.

If you’re looking for a more hands-on experience while studying abroad, during which you can explore rural Bhutan, there are also programs available in which students can participate in research relating to environmental conservation. The Ugyen Wangchuck Institute for Conservation and Environment is an example of one organization that students can work with while studying in Bhutan.
