Expect to encounter birthing with no pain relief, unfamiliar procedures, and low-resource clinics while interning as a midwife in Sri Lanka. On top of the fact that around 40 percent of births here are cesarean, you will come face to face with an array of cases that are much less common back home. 

There is also every chance to supplement your placement with a more rural experience in the heart of the Sri Lankan jungle. Living and working in a remote village community and learning ancient medicinal recipes from a local master are opportunities you’re unlikely to meet again.

This experience will give you an unprecedented opportunity to learn about Sri Lankan cultures and beliefs. With your spare time in and around Kandy, go whale watching, rafting, or indulge in a cocktail or two.
