<p>Weird is welcome on King Street, home to Sydney’s densest population of students and young adults, where you will meet a colorful hodgepodge of people in a town decorated in Victorian style buildings. And if you ever get bored of the myriad of themed bars down the street, attend any of their special events. My favorites are 20’s swing dancing at Ms. Peaches and Tranny (Drag for you Americans) Bingo at the Cooper’s Hotel.</p>

<p><em>Not the bohemian type?</em> No problem, for a taste of the finer things in life, you can take a short bus ride to the Central Business District. Here you can visit the Queen Victoria Building for a grand look into boutique shopping or have a posh evening at the Westfield Sydney Central Plaza, which also conveniently hosts the entrance to the Sydney Tower.<br><br>If you're the type to lose yourself in nature, there’s no need to travel across the country to be surrounded by mountains, waterfalls, or forests. Aside from the popular attractions, like the Blue Mountains and the Royal National Park, any coastal walk will ensure you a good workout and some unforgettable sights. And if you ever want to take an unconventional dip in the water, you can dive into swimming holes like the Mahon Pool, Lake Parramatta, and the Mermaid pool, just a few of the most beautiful swimming holes in Australia.</p>

I just got back from my semester in Sydney, and I am already reminiscing on my experience and planning my visit back! One thing that I loved about Sydney (and Australia in general) is how there is something for everyone. As someone who loves to do a little bit of everything, Sydney was the perfect location for me! It offered the city, beach, mountains, and everything in between within under 2 hours. As someone who loves to get active and be outdoors, I felt that Sydney was the perfect place for me to explore. The public transportation was also amazing and very easy to navigate which was super helpful as a student. My housing accommodation was a 15 minute walk to campus, and otherwise very central to everything! It was so nice to be a 3 minute walk to the shopping center and have the ability to grab groceries to/from any of my daily endeavors. The city of Sydney was safe, clean, and I experienced nothing but positive interactions with locals. Even though Australia is an English speaking country, I found Sydney to be very international, and because it is so much closer to Asia than the United States, I was exposed to a lot of new foods and people which was super cool! Aside from all of these amazing aspects of my abroad experience, the only downside would be the education differences I experienced at the University of Sydney. This was not so much "bad" as it was different. I definitely had to adjust to the academic system in Australia and it took a little getting used to for me to feel more confident in my academics. My roommates and I all were definitely a little bit shocked when we weren't receiving the high grades we were used to receiving at our home universities, and it was challenging at times to balance having a memorable time abroad with also focusing on academics. As someone who cares deeply about doing well in school, this was the only difficult adjustment for me while I was abroad, however I was still able to do very well and my professors were very accommodating and understanding when I expressed concerns. I would absolutely recommend this program to anyone who has been considering Australia for any reason! In my opinion, it is so worthwhile to be able to study abroad here because it is so far away and harder to travel to for only a couple of weeks- it was so awesome to stay for 5 whole months! It was also great to be stationed on the other side of the world and made traveling to other countries (New Zealand, Fiji, South East Asia, etc) a lot more attainable than from the U.S. I am truly so grateful for my time abroad and will cherish the memories I have forever!

An experience to remember

Studying abroad at the University of Sydney, despite doing so remotely, was a remarkable experience. In terms of academics, each unit of study I enrolled in presented a unique challenge. Nonetheless, by the time the semester was over and due to the quality and supportiveness of the professors and TAs, both of whom proved to be exemplary instructors, I felt confident in the knowledge I had acquired and in my ability to apply that knowledge outside of the classroom. In terms of support unrelated to my classes, I always felt confident I could contact my Study Abroad Adviser and receive a response to whichever inquiry I had or alternately, receive aid or advise regarding any issue. Last but not least, although I did not have the pleasure of attending in person, the variety of activities organized by the university through Zoom ensured I felt as part of the community despite the distance. Overall, I would 100% recommend choosing the University of Sydney as a study abroad destination; it was a great experience I am thankful for having had the opportunity of living.

It was good to juggle my studies and casual work while I was offshore! It was really hard to work with my team members for assessments (for time zone wise) but it turned out it was worth the hard work in the end!

Memorable time at the USYD!

Although my program was executed online, I made friends with my colleagues, teachers, teaching assistants and my classmates this semester. I received a lot of warmhearted help from the staff of this university. For example, the international officer Jane Andrew helped me a lot when I was enrolling on this new institution at the beginning of the semester.  And the career development department of USYD helped me much more than my home institution with an international vision about how to be admitted by the top overseas universities continuing my study as a PhD Candidate. I feel very at ease with my group members when we discuss our DATA 1001 assignments in English. All in all, semester 2, 2021, would be a valuable memory that I will never forget.

Great, then meh

Class course selection was fantastic. The course catalogue offered at USYD was some of the most expansive I've ever seen. But the actual execution of the classes in terms of lectures, assignments, projects, and recitations were pretty lackluster. Frankly, I'm pretty disappointed in the teaching staff's responsiveness to students and the general lack of timely, relevant communication.

Super helpful! Incredible staff and very attentive! They made me feel at home in Sydney and have a great experience abroad. Emails were quick to replay and attention was always given to us student who needed it.

The Fairytale Life

My study abroad experience was absolutely incredible. From snorkeling in the Great Barrier Reef, to zip lining through the most diverse rainforest in the world, I couldn't have asked for anything more. It opened my eyes to so many new perspectives on the world, and made me want to travel to so many new places. IES was an amazing program, and helped with every step of the way! I will 100% be back to Australia, right where I belong!
