Amazing opportunity
November 18, 2022by: Katharine Woodmansee - United StatesProgram: Wildlife Vet ExperienceThis trip was incredible. I had the opportunity to work with many different species including sable, inyala, kudu, impala, rhino, water buffalo, wild dogs, blesbok, roan antelope, cheetahs, cows, and domestic dogs. During my two weeks in South Africa I was able to assist in DNA collection including fecal samples, hair follicle samples, blood samples and smears. I performed IM and subcutaneous injections to administer vaccinations, dewormer, antibiotics, and vitamins. I administered microchips and scanned for existing microchips in various animals. I was able to take part in five rhino dehornings which was an incredible experience. Having the opportunity to work with three different veterinarians was very interesting. I was able to see how each vet did things differently and was able to pick up the things that I liked/didn't like to then incorporate them into my own practice. Working with wild animals was a very different experience because each animal had to be anesthetized before handing them. This was vastly different from giving shots to domestic dogs or even cattle. Each animals breathing had to be strictly monitored while under anesthesia and some, like the rhinos, were given supportive oxygen. Throughout my two weeks there I became more familiar with different drug combinations and effects which furthered my clinical understandings. I was able to observe animals in their natural habitats while on game drives through reserves which was very interesting
Wildlife vet experience
November 16, 2022by: Grace Drummond - United KingdomProgram: Wildlife Vet ExperienceThis was an amazing experience. I met some really lovely people who I will never forget, and got to take part in some extremely moving projects. I’d highly recommend this project to anyone, whether you are interested in wildlife medicine or not, as it is extremely good clinical experience and encouraged me to get hands on and improve my confidence.
The trip of a lifetime!!
November 16, 2022by: Alex Quinn-Sirera - IrelandProgram: Wildlife Vet ExperienceThis trip has been the most incredible two weeks of my life. It is very evident how much thought and time goes into making sure it is the best possible experience. Aidan and Dan were amazing, always so attentive, and knowledgeable and most importantly a lot of fun to hang out with these last two weeks! The trip really would not have been the same without them. Roger was super organised from the very beginning always making sure everything was okay and immediately answering any queries. Getting to see and treat these wild animals up close is such a unique experience and I have made memories that will last me a lifetime. Dr. Boshoff and Dr. Rogers along with the other vets were always very helpful and patient always explaining everything and making sure they made time at the end of each day for questions. They were a lot of fun to work with and I learnt so much from them. This trip has opened up my mind to a completely different type of wildlife from what I am used to and has really solidified my passion to become a wildlife vet. I would highly recommend this trip to any vet students who are interested in working with wildlife and conservation.
