My dreams come true on Tenerife

I would never have been able to find this perfect internship position if I were looking on my own. I wanted to get experience in the management department of a hotel because I already have had lots of experience in other departments such as reception, F&B and housekeeping. This internship prepared me to become a hotel assistant manager. Now I feel more confident to take the next steps in my career towards my goal to become a good hotel manager. I will be always grateful for this life changing experience Spanish Work Exchange Programme offered to me.

I had the best time of my life so far and I really enjoyed working in the hotel business. Spanish Work Exchange Programme organized my internship very professional. My colleagues in the hotel were all Spanish and I was forced to improve my Spanish knowledge quick because they all encouraged me to communicate in Spanish with them. The hotel guests have been very international and therefore, I got to know different cultures. I spend more time in the office but for the organisation of some events and some VIPs, me and my colleagues managed the communication with the hotel guests.

I can recommend this internship program to get experience abroad in the marketing department. Of course, I love the golden sand of the beautiful beaches in the south of Fuerteventura and in the north which are also gorgeous. I did my internship in a 5-star hotel, the accommodation was nice in an apartment close to the beach and the food had a good variety for a staff canteen.

That was the best experience of my life!

The company Spanish Work Exchange Programme organized my internship very quick. I was a bit late. In just 2 weeks my internship was organised, and the agency also helped me to get the Erasmus documents done. I did my internship in the Public Relations Department in a 5-star hotel on Tenerife. I had full board and free accommodation, no additional costs for me.  More interns have been with me in the hotel, so we enjoyed our spare-time together. Many thanks to the S-W-E-P team for your dedication and to make this wonderful time abroad possible for me!

Horrible Experience with S-W-E-P

I had a horrible experience with S-W-E-P. I was supposed to do my internship in the reception department at a hotel in Tenerife but I only stayed for a week due to the following reasons:

- My room, which was in the basement of the hotel, was full of spiders and there was a gigantic air conditioner right outside the window which was so loud that it was impossible to get any sleep. When I asked if I could be moved to another room, I was told no.

- The hotel staff were incredibly rude to me; they were very unwelcoming, they didn’t give me a work schedule despite me asking for it numerous times and they complained about my lack of Spanish skills which I had been told wouldn’t be a problem.

- The staff food was disgusting and looked liked the guests’ leftovers.

When I raised these issues with Conny, she got very offensive. She told me off for asking for another room and said that the staff’s bad attitude towards me was a reflection of my own attitude. At no point did she offer to get in contact with the hotel management to try to solve the problems.

After a week of not sleeping I decided to leave. The following days I received several phone calls and emails from Conny; she demanded to know why I had left and tried to guilt trip me into going back to the hotel. She is beyond unprofessional and her services are a complete waste of money. I personally wouldn’t recommend S-W-E-P to anyone.

Growing up fast while exploring the world

September 2016 I moved to the Netherlands to study in Hotelschool the Hague and lived there until recently.  First year on dorms and the second year I moved in with friends. During my studies I also had 6-months internship in Tenerife without speaking Spanish and was able to arrange place to live and all documents needed. Afterwards I became fluent in Spanish.

Wonderful experience, I had the best time of my life!!

I am studying Business Administration at the University of Munich and I wanted to get some work experience in the Human Resources field in Spain. I searched online and I decided to do a hotel internship on Tenerife because the program offered free accommodation and meals. My internship with Spanish Work Exchange Programme has been excellent, therefore, I like to thank the whole s-w-e-p team for their dedication to organise all these internships for students. We have been 4 interns in the same hotel which made it easy to get in touch from the first day, we had a very good time together and we were able to explore the surroundings on weekends. I was the only intern in the HR Department and I enjoyed working in a small team. I also liked the island and I hope that other interns will get so much out of such a hotel work placement in Spain as I did. After finishing my studies I will go back to Tenerife.

I am more than happy with my internship organized by Spanish Work Exchange Programme. I had the best 3 months of my life on Tenerife. I did my internship in the public relations department in a 5 star hotel. The organisation was very quick. I was a bit late contacting s-w-e-p but they have been able to organise everything in less than 4 weeks. Paperwork continued after my arrival, I had to apply for my NIE Number and my social security number. Not an easy thing to do when you are alone on the island but s-w-e-p and other s-w-e-p interns in the hotel helped me to get all papers done the very next day. My tasks in public relations have been the same as I expected because I received beforehand a job description. Sometimes it was a bit challenging getting satisfied the hotel guests. It happened that one guest complaints about something which another guest really likes. I learned that it is impossible for a hotel to satisfy all guests. For me it was very important to learn about the hotel business because I am studying tourism management and after my first experience in that field I know that I will work in hotels in my future.
