<h3>What inspired you to go abroad?&nbsp;</h3><p>I studied biology and I missed more practical experience during my studies. That's why I decided I wanted to do an internship or a voluntary service. Because I love to meet people from other cultures and I love to get to know other lifestyles than the ones at home that I already know, I knew I wanted to go somewhere abroad. I already was paying attention to Brazil for two years before my travels and was fascinated by the country.&nbsp;</p><figure class="awesome-image right-aligned" style="width: 50%;"><img style="" src="http://www5.goabroad.com/images/interviews/interviewphoto1-lisabrokmeier-1544768059.jpg" alt="Graminha in Brazil"><figcaption class="caption"><p>Graminha, one of the highest Peaks (and definitely the one with the most beautiful view) is a three-four hours walk from Iracambi. And obviously one of the must-dos when you are there.&nbsp;</p><p></p></figcaption></figure><h3>Why did you choose Amigos de Iracambi?&nbsp;</h3><p>Iracambi is an NGO which not only combines NGO work with science, it also has this human part where they are working with local farmers and school children. I was already interested in NGO work before, so I know I couldn't just do science. That's why I decided that I want to know Iracambi.&nbsp;</p><h3>What was your favorite part about Brazil?&nbsp;</h3><p>It was so nice to meet all the Brazilians who are working in the NGO or nearby. They invited me to bonfires, waterfalls, parties, barbecues, on hiking and climbing tours, and on a trip to the sea. So the best part is really all the beautiful landscape and all the friends I made in this time.&nbsp;</p><h3>What made your experience abroad unique?&nbsp;</h3><p>I think in every country you make unique experiences because you meet different people and you are in a totally different environment than at home. So you are also much more open to new experiences. And every experience which you never could have at home is unique. So of course it is unique to have a waterfall nearby your house, to wake up with tropical birds singing, to dance to a totally different music than at home, and to eat all the Tropical fruits directly from the garden. I lived in the middle of the Atlantic Rainforest and it was just gorgeous!&nbsp;</p><h3>How did local staff support you throughout your program?&nbsp;</h3><p>In Iracambi you can work very independant and realize also your own projects if you want. But everytime you need an advice for some problem or some idea you have, you will also find someone to listen to and to exchange ideas. And I really recommend this to you because then you are able to see which ideas are really possible and worth it and which not. Apart from this, there is a volunteer coordinator which coordinates all the projects for the volunteers. You can ask them about what to do and they will support you in your tasks.&nbsp;</p><h3>What's one thing you wish you would have done differently?&nbsp;</h3><p>I stayed in Iracambi for three months. Before and afterwards I had some university exams. This stressed me out, so it would have been much more relaxed if I had come with more time without this stress that back at home I have to go directly to library to study. And of course, when our trips near the end, it feels like the time has been too short.&nbsp;</p><figure class="awesome-image centered" style=""><img style="" src="http://www5.goabroad.com/images/interviews/2-1544768086.jpg" alt="Pico da Bandeira, Brazil's third biggest mountain Peak"><figcaption class="caption"><p>Pico da Bandeira, Brazil's third biggest mountain Peak- with the staff and other volunteers of Iracambi.</p><p></p></figcaption></figure><h3>Describe a typical day in the life of your program.&nbsp;</h3><p>Breakfast with all the volunteers and the staff who ate breakfast. Then working together with one of the staff members. I often went to harvest coffee at the ecological coffee plantation.</p><p>Then we eat together lunch at the home restaurant there. Afterwards we chilled and worked again for a short time. Once a week there were people who came from a local school where I always helped or I did some marketing stuff or helped in the plant nursery.</p><p>In the afternoon we used to drink coffee together and afterwards I could do whatever I liked. I often went to the waterfalls or on a little hike. In the night we ate together again and played afterwards cards or played guitar and sang.</p><h3>What did you enjoy doing in your free time?&nbsp;</h3><p>Normally I left Iracambi on the weekends to go to a city nearby, and I would go to bars and parties. Or I went hiking on mountains, bathing in natural pools, or climbing on rocks. Sometimes I also traveled further to some beautiful cities or mountains which are here in the region. Just a three hour ride away is the third biggest peak in Brazil, for example, and in less than five hours you can reach the beautiful sea.&nbsp;</p><h3>What was your accommodation like? What did you like best about it?&nbsp;</h3><p>I was hosted in the main house at the center, which is a charming seventy year old farmer house with four dorm rooms, a common room, and a small kitchen. I loved living there. You are always in the heart of the action.</p><p>The best thing was that the windows don't have any glass, so when you wake up in the morning and you open the shutters, you look directly into nature and hear the most beautiful bird sounds. If you like to go on retreats, there are also cabins which are more comfortable because you have your own bathroom and it is warmer - but in my opinion, it is also less fun.&nbsp;</p><figure class="awesome-image centered" style=""><img style="" src="http://www5.goabroad.com/images/interviews/interviewphoto3-lisabrokmeier-1544768077.jpg" alt="Bioconstruction- Building a house at a neighbours of Iracambi"><figcaption class="caption"><p>Bioconstruction- Building a house at a neighbours of Iracambi</p><p></p></figcaption></figure><h3>What is one thing every participant should know before participating in your program?&nbsp;</h3><p>You should be definitely a nature lover. You live in the middle of nowhere and the next shop is about 12 km away. But it is so nice to have less to consume and more nature, which leads to more appreciation of what you have at home.&nbsp;</p><h3>Now that you're home, how has your program abroad impacted your life?&nbsp;</h3><p>I became more aware of subjects such as sustainability, farming, and the environment. I try to consume less and produce less waste. And I eat more regional vegetables.&nbsp;</p><h3>Would you recommend Amigos de Iracambi to others? Why?&nbsp;</h3><p>Yes. Iracambi is not perfect, but every person who visits is welcome and changes a little bit. It is very interesting how the NGO works and it feels good to be a part of an engaged team, which you can support through this program.&nbsp;</p>

<h3>What inspired you to work for <a href="https://www.goabroad.com/providers/iracambi-rainforest" title="" data-contentlink="102433">Iracambi</a>?</h3><p>I am able to combine my academic/professional experiences with my passion for the environment. I hold two bachelor&rsquo;s degrees in tourism and biology and a master&rsquo;s degree in environmental conservancy.&nbsp;</p><p>At Iracambi, I've been able to combine and apply my varied expertise to the planning and organization of volunteer experiences and projects at the Atlantic Rainforest Conservancy.&nbsp;</p><h3>Describe a typical day at work.</h3><p>I begin my day by preparing/checking the daily schedule. Then I reach out to the team and the volunteers involved in the daily activities and check to make sure they are ready to get started! I will then check the website and respond/answer any requests or questions.&nbsp;</p><p>Other typical tasks include scheduling and conducting online meetings with potential candidates, reviewing the progress and results of the volunteer projects, and prepping for future projects. I feel that I can really make a difference in the volunteer experience by providing quality information to our volunteers and helping them reach their personal goals.</p><h3>What is your favorite part of your job?</h3><p>I love teaching the volunteers about the rainforest and agroecology practices. I also enjoy exposing them to traditional Brazilian customs. But my favorite part of my job has to be simply working with the volunteers and empowering them to make a difference.&nbsp;</p><h3>How do you use your education and international background in your current role?</h3><p>I use it all the time! My academic and professional background is applied and improved upon daily due to the day to day planning of the volunteer activities and projects.</p><h3>What challenges do you often face and how do you overcome them?</h3><p>The biggest challenge is planning and organizing the daily activities. There are a fair amount of unpredictable elements like heavy rains, broken machinery, lack of material, etc. We need to adapt to different situations frequently. Simple interactions with people can change the way you think and reveal a wonderful experience! We are a worldwide community! But what's really magical about our organization is that we are able to offer in one single place an amazing experience that involves nature conservancy practices, an unforgettable opportunity to live and work in the forest, and a highly enjoyable environment made up of beautiful preserved trails, waterfalls, and mountains.&nbsp;</p><p>Volunteers get to share in local cultural practices with local and international friends. We plan to improve our community based environmental conservancy projects in order to make this more clear.&nbsp;</p><h3>What do you hope participants take away from your programs?</h3><p>I hope they have an amazing experience and learn a lot about forest conservation practices and the culture of this specific region in Brazil. Also, we hope that they continue community based environmental conservancy wherever they are living.</p><h3>How do you help support participants?</h3><p>I provide introductory information, conduct the application process, provide an orientation upon arrival, frequently check in to make sure all of their needs are being met, and generally help them with whatever I can.&nbsp;</p><h3>If you could participate in one of your organization's programs, where would you go and what would you do?</h3><p>I would participate in the Forest for Water Program. I respond that each day will likely be different! The rainforest is not a cookie cutter experience. The activities list is endless! You will make friends for life! You will get to work in the nursery, maintain the forest trails, visit local farms at tree planting times, and even work with school kids and help teach them English.&nbsp;</p><p>Other activities include forest monitoring, construction projects, graphic design, photography, video making, or helping with marketing and fundraising. In your free time, you can explore the forest, swim in the rivers, climb mountains, hike trails and interact with the local community!&nbsp;</p><h3>What advice do you have for individuals thinking about going abroad?</h3><p>I think it is very important to experience a country beyond its popular tourist destinations. You can do it by experiencing a local practice, helping an organization, or by interacting with local people.&nbsp;&nbsp;</p><h3>What does meaningful travel mean to you?</h3><p>It means you get involved in actions that change your life and the lives of others. It's an opportunity to do something for someone else that will also benefit you.&nbsp;</p><h3>What qualities in program &amp; host community relations are important to you? (And your organization?)</h3><p>Mutual honesty is essential to Iracambi&rsquo;s mission. We need to trust one another in order to support the local community and provide them with a healthy forest to improve their quality of life.</p>

All human beings are natural communicators. And for the non-profit sector, communication is crucial. We’re looking for Marketing and Communication Assistants to work in:
- Bilingual content production: website, blog, social networks, newsletter, etc;\
- Graphic design: Creating visual content for social media, reports, etc;
- Audiovisual: photography, photo editing, helping organize our photo library, making
and editing videos;

Our goal is to become the go-to place for students, researchers and volunteers seeking solutions to some of the thorniest problems facing us all: how to live sustainably, how to preserve the resources of the planet, and how to do our part in preventing and mitigating climate disaster. Our vision is to see the beautiful Atlantic Forest preserved and protected so that all its species, people, animals and plants can flourish. We know that restoration is possible because we've done it . But, if we are to really make an impact, we need to involve everyone, old and young, town dwellers and country dwellers, students, schoolkids, and young people of all ages.
  
So what about our programs? Let's start with Forests4Water, which grew out of a simple request from one of our neighbors. His spring had run dry and he wanted to "borrow" some trees from our forest nursery. He'd heard that trees planted on steep deforested slopes can recuperate springs, although he didn't believe it.

He does now. And over the past three years we've recuperated over a hundred springs on local farms, donating trees from our forest nursery and helping with preparation, planting, and monitoring.

Our program of regenerative agriculture creates model agroecology plots, combining crops like coffee, bananas and food crops with native forest trees and medicinal plants, producing healthy, chemical free food, and helping to restore degraded soils.

Our educational programs include running workshops, introducing local public school children to the rainforest (Young Ecoleaders), hosting volunteers, researchers and faculty-led groups from international universities, and working on sustainable development and public policy at local, regional and state level.

Our volunteer program hosts dozens of people of all ages from many different countries, all united in the desire to leave the world a little better than they found it.

Yes we've won some international awards and prizes - the Peer Award for Sustainability, Premio Latin America Verde, listed among the top performing organizations on the crowdfunding site Globalgiving, shortlisted for the Alcan Prize for Sustainability, but what really gets you  out of bed in the mornings with a smile on our face is when we hear that young Rafael, first generation student from a very needy farm family, and a graduate of our Junior Science Program, won a full scholarship to the Federal University to study biology. Or when we see Carminha, raised on a remote little farm in the mountains with no expectations of ever getting a paid job, opening her own restaurant, providing a community service, and modeling independence for women in a macho rural community. Or hear that one of our students from North Carolina is completing her doctorate in climate science after seeing for herself how it is to be on the front line of biodiversity conservation and sustainability.

Resprouting the love for sowing trees

Thankful for having the opportunity to try to contribute somehow to the ONG. I wish the effort to strengthen the link with the community and the effort to spread the conservationist ideology in the region results in good changes for the environment - not only natural, but also the social well-being and the economical situation as those are all part of the environment. In those 4 months of stay, I could experience and fell the power of the rain forest and the beauty of the tree seedling, as well as the kindness of countryside people from Minas Gerais (povo mineiro). Definitely I´m coming back.

Maravilhoso momento de conexão com a natureza

A ONG possui excelente estrutura e disponibiliza uma experiência única de aprendizado e proximidade com a natureza, os colaboradores propiciam uma convivência agradável e fazem com que cada momento em IRACAMBI seja lembrado com saudade e satisfação, a vontade de voltar é imensa e está nos meus planos para a próxima oportunidade!

Meu primeiro voluntariado

Desde pequena, sempre gostei muito de escrever...talvez por ser um hábito herdado da minha vó e mãe, ou por eu ser muito sensível em relação ao que me envolve fisicamente e emocionalmente, ou ambos. Hoje, me faltam palavras. Tentar fazer caber nas linhas desse caderno tudo que eu senti e vivi em Iracambi seria banal. Mas eu venho tentando organizar esses sentimentos desde quando decidi ser voluntária. Não é segredo pra ninguém que sou encantada com a singularidade da Natureza e grata demais por ter meu cantinho na roça. Mas relutei por quase um mês por motivos pessoais que nem eu mesma consegui definir até decidir vir sozinha; e vim. Eu viajei por 9 dias, pra fora da minha zona de conforto e pra dentro de mim. Eu aprendi sobre solos, raízes, sementes, folhas, bichos, fungos, nascentes e, dentre mil outras coisas relacionadas ao meio ambiente, aprendi sobre o ser humano. Conheci pessoas incríveis com ideias sensacionais que transbordam sabedoria e força de vontade pra manter a biodiversidade e a grandiosidade da Mata Atlântica. Fui abraçada e acolhida por tudo e por todos. Foi uma troca constante de conhecimento, com muita paciência, descontração e entusiasmo. Que coisa linda foi participar de projetos socio-ambientais na região do meu cantinho preferido no mundo que é Belisário. Que experiência ímpar.
Hoje eu vou embora, mas um pedacinho de mim fica aqui. Tomara que eu tenha conseguido transmitir nesse escrito o tanto que eu tô feliz e realizada, mas, acima de tudo, a importância e o aconchego de Iracambi.

Estar em Iracambi foi uma experiência maravilhosa, mesmo que por pouco tempo. 

Conheci a ONG através do curso de formação de lideranças ambientais. Antes mesmo de acabar o curso eu já tinha combinado de ir para Iracambi para participar do plantio de mudas. 

Infelizmente fiquei somente por 1 semana nas instalações. Mas consegui participar de mais de uma etapa do projeto de mudas. Participei do plantio, auxiliei no viveiro, ajudei a coletar terra para preparar os sacos de mudas para o plantio de sementes. Foi muito interessante poder experimentar todas essas etapas. Foi um momento em que  pude realmente contribuir de forma prática em algo que eu acredito. E isso me fez muito bem. Renovou minhas energias. Poder auxiliar em um projeto de reflorestamento (ainda mais em um bioma super degradado) foi algo incrível. Além da importância do trabalho ainda dava tempo de ficar encantada com as belezas da paisagem.  As pessoas que conheci nesse processo foram super simpáticas e respeitosas comigo, incluindo os terceiros contratados pela ONG. 

Por fim, gostaria de voltar a Iracambi com a possibilidade de ficar por mais tempo para que eu possa vivenciar os projetos com maior intensidade. Quem sabe até com a presença de mais pessoas para que possamos trocar experiências e ideias

Amazing time in the Brazilian rainforest

My two months stay at Iracambi was one of the most amazing experience I had so far. I really enjoyed the location on the rainforest and the action of tree planting feels so rewarding! Also there was enough free time to explore the surroundings and go swimming at the waterfalls. The staff  there is really great and make you feel confortable.

Iracambi: the place to be

If you want a volunteering experience which has an impact, Iracambi is the place to be. There is a variety of activities you can do from working in the nursery, tree planting, community education and partnership, etc. Working with Iracambi is a great experience. We need more organizations doing what they do - saving the environment and educating people.

The experience of a lifetime

As the only student from my university to accept a summer position with Iracambi, I was originally nervous about what to expect. However, after my first contact with Carla, all of my nervousness was erased. At Iracambi, I was met by a supportive and interesting staff and volunteer cohort that not only worked tirelessly to make me feel at home, but helped me discover my passions and a project that related to them. From visiting local coffee plantations to leaning about agroforests and sustainable farming to teaching English courses at the local school, I was given ample opportunities to learn and challenge myself intellectually.

While Iracambi allows their volunteers to learn through real world experience, knowledge of the environment is only a small portion of what you will leave with. Minas Gerais hosts one of the richest cultures within Brazil and Iracambi works tirelessly to ensure that their volunteers have the opportunity to experience it. From indescribable comida mineira provided by Iracambi's world class chef, Larissa to the baked goods sold across the street by Carminha, you will leave Iracambi with "saudades" of the food. In addition, Deivid, a professional tour guide and coordinator of Iracambi's nursery, provides all volunteers with invaluable tips and recommendations for weekend excursions across Minas Gerais, Espiritio Santo, and Rio de Janeiro. However, you do not have to travel far to have an excursion. Countless trails, waterfalls, mountains, and attractions are located on or in close proximity to Iracambi's state-of-the-art campus.

Among all of my experiences at Iracambi, the most important to me are the relationships and friendships that I had made. All volunteers and staff members at Iracambi come from different backgrounds, but all are united by a common theme, a passion for the rainforest. There, you will encounter the some of the most passionate, intelligent, and interesting people in the world which, without-a-doubt, lead to future successes and change lives. Overall, my time at Iracambi provided me with an invaluable, intellectually challenging, and meaningful experience that I will treasure for the rest of my life.

Living life in the middle of paradise!

Life in Iracambi is absolutely incredible! From the moment my group of four other university students arrived, we were treated with such love and excitement for the next nine weeks! Prior to the trip, the volunteer coordinator and Robin ensured we were in proper placements and ready for the trip of a life time. We were placed in the cabins which worked perfectly as we were able to be culturally immersed with the other international volunteers. Every single day it will be a different adventure while you are living in the middle of the rainforest. Whether that be hiking a trail that has not been cared for in over three years or battling it out with a Brazilian jumping spider, Iracambi has a way of transforming someone's normal into spectaculars. The staff is probably the most dedicated NGO workers, I have personally ever encountered. The staff is round the clock ensuring all volunteers are safe and cared for while still enjoying card games in rainy days! Iracambi has proven to be a dedicated NGO just from the way you will see their community unity and the network of opportunities for locals due to the projects in the center. Even with problems concerning external pressures, Iracambi came together and supported our group in such an amazing fashion! While living in the middle of the Atlantic Rainforest for nine weeks, you are bond to find yourself reaching new heights both mentally and physically! Whether that be hiking at 5am to see the sunrise or realizing how important passion and patience play into a comfortable working environment, Iracambi encourages volunteers to expand their horizon. The staff aided our group in weekend trips to far towns and exploring beautiful cultural experiences local to Iracambi. 100% recommend this program to anyone who is interested in escaping city life to learn about environmental justice while living in the most beautiful paradise!
