Unforgettable Volunteering Experience with Animals

by: Mary Meier - United StatesProgram: Volunteer Programs in Spain

From the moment I was picked up at the airport and taken to my accommodation (which had everything I needed), everything about this experience was simply amazing! Taking care of rescued animals, giving them love, walking, grooming, and playing with them was truly rewarding. It helped me regain a sense of purpose and the joy of helping others. My apartment mates were about my age but from different countries, which made it even more fun. We went on excursions together and joined activities organized by the school, where I met so many incredible people. Plus, the Spanish classes included in the program helped me improve so much—I can now communicate with no problem! ??✨ The atmosphere was fantastic, and Bilbao was the perfect location. The metro took you to beautiful beaches, and if you preferred the mountains, you could be there in just 30 minutes. It’s such a hidden gem—not the most famous tourist spot, but an absolute treasure! This experience was truly life-changing, and even my university recognized its value when I returned. I couldn’t recommend it more! ??? Let me know if you’d like any tweaks! ?

amazing volunteering experience in Northern Spain

This volunteering program in permaculture and gardening was absolutely fantastic! ?? Not only is Bilbao an incredible city, but the whole experience was beyond my expectations. The accommodation was super comfortable, and the cultural activities organized by the school were a solid 10/10! The Spanish school was excellent—I improved my Spanish so much in a fun and relaxed environment. My classmates were all super friendly, and I had the best time. The school was also really welcoming (LGTB+ friendly), and I always felt safe and valued. ? I can only say great things about this program! I learned a lot about permaculture, the importance of being useful, and how rewarding it feels to do something for others. If you’re thinking about it—go for it! You won’t regret it. ?

An Exceptional Learning Experience in Bilbao

I recently completed a Spanish course in Bilbao, and it was an experience I’ll never forget. The city itself is stunning, with its blend of modern architecture, rich history, and vibrant culture—it’s the perfect place to immerse yourself in Spanish life. The school provided a welcoming and supportive atmosphere, making it easy to feel at home. The teachers were highly skilled and patient, tailoring lessons to suit different levels and learning styles. Their dedication and enthusiasm truly made a difference in my progress. My accommodation was excellent—clean, comfortable, and conveniently located. It offered the perfect balance of privacy and the chance to connect with others. The cultural activities were another highlight. From exploring the Guggenheim Museum to tasting traditional Basque cuisine and joining local festivals, every moment was both fun and enriching. These experiences brought the language and culture to life in a way that goes beyond the classroom. I would wholeheartedly recommend this program to any adult learner looking to improve their Spanish while enjoying a rich cultural experience. Bilbao and this school exceeded all my expectations!

Guggenheim museum is just a small piece of all you can get when visiting Bilbao

Growing up with various multicultural experiences led me to study abroad. I hosted a Spanish exchange student for a month, and she hosted me at her home with her family in Aguilar de Campoo, Spain. Additionally, during my Senior year of high school, my family and I hosted a Norwegian student.  After my first year of undergraduate studies, I volunteered in Ecuador for a Summer and during my Junior year, I studied abroad in Moldova and Russia. Upon graduation, I moved to Costa Rica and lived there for about two and half years.
