The experience with GVI in Thailand was incredible
January 29, 2025by: Natalya Viola Elisa WaddyProgram: Teaching English and TEFL Internship in ThailandThe experience with GVI in Thailand was incredible, was the best way to start 2025 in the new year. I made amazing friends and felt like I learned so much and was worth every penny I spent on the program.
Nothing was too much trouble for them
January 29, 2025by: Pam ParkesProgram: Women’s Empowerment Volunteering In CambodiaThis was an excellent program in a beautiful place. Siem Reap Is a lovely friendly city with lots to do. The program is immaculately organised with plenty of variety and we were frequently consulted on what we would like to do next. We stayed in a lovely hotel that was friendly, welcoming , clean, comfortable, with delicious food. The hotel staff were young and still learning their trade but were friendly and very eager to please and learn. It was a pleasure to stay in a social enterprise where profits will be fed back into the community. The program was full and offered a variety of projects that ranged from primary age children through to adults and monks. It was very well organised with good resources and efficient transport provided to projects. I felt really well cared for by the GVI staff on base, nothing was too much trouble for them. The volunteers were a lovely mix of Nationalities and ages ranging from 18 through to mid 70s everyone was willing to share their experiences and we supported each other. I can thoroughly recommend this program.
The sense of community is overriding.
January 23, 2025by: Susan KennedyProgram: Women's Empowerment Project in NepalMy experience in Nepal volunteering with GVI was amazing. The country, people and volunteer projects were unforgettable. Being immersed in the local Nepalese culture to teaching on the projects was a a great experience and very rewarding. Coming from the UK where western life can be depressing and full of ungrateful people to Nepal with all its challenges (crossing the road can be a life threatening hazard!) where people are happy, grateful, willing to help each other, the sense of community is overriding. It is a magical place. I can't wait to return.

What inspired you to travel abroad?
I had finished college and I was doing side-jobs and things like that. I didn’t really know what I was going to do, and I had a friend that was living in Taiwan teaching who would visit Thailand every year for a Chinese New Year holiday. So she just asked if I wanted to be here for a couple of weeks, so I said sure. I figured, I didn’t have much money, so I was going to save up the money and stay there for a while and just wander around and do some volunteering and see what happens and then I never ended up leaving. I didn’t plan for that!

What inspired you to travel abroad?
Well, it’s a big market. I would say there are so many volunteer orgs in Thailand offering the same programs. From my experience, talking to our volunteers, they are looking for something a bit more, different. They want to travel, they want to get an authentic experience, something a bit beyond any touristic experience. To experience the place, the people and the culture. The fact that GVI operates our own projects makes us stand out among the crowd.

What inspired you to travel abroad?
Our founder and director, Richard Walton, volunteered internationally when he was 18. He had a great time but felt the experienced was focused upon his personal development as opposed to community development. I think he built a bandstand or some such thing which was pulled down by the community afterwards and used for firewood.
