Depending on the needs on the ground at any given time, you will work alongside community members to help deliver basic needs such as water security initiatives or renovating schools to establish suitable learning environments. Water security: Unsafe drinking water and unhygienic sanitation practices can cause widespread health problems in the community. You may be involved in building rainwater harvesting tanks. Overall, I felt safe and looked after during my time here.
February 25, 2025by: Tom HookeProgram: Volunteer on Construction Projects in NepalI participated in the construction project. The work was enjoyable and felt meaningful as most of my time was spent painting at a village primary school. The construction project consists of whatever work is needed for the community at the time, so the work sometimes lacks in variety; despite this, there wasn't a day where I didn't enjoy the painting or carpentry, which took up the other part of my project work. There's lots to do in an around Pokhara on weekends, and GVI staff are very helpful in organising weekend excursions such as trekking. Food was generally delicious, though participants need to be aware that the food they are given often won't consist of much meat. Bringing plenty of spending money for food and weekend activities is advisable. Overall, I felt safe and looked-after during my time here. I was the only volunteer here for a couple of weeks and at most there were only two others. Those planning on coming to GVI Nepal should know that it can be quiet at times so if you're not someone that really enjoys their own company, definitely aim to come at a time when there are plenty of other volunteers, I'd say at least five. Trekking around Pokhara is fantastic by the way, definitely do Poon Hill.
My time with GVI Nepal was incredible.

Life as a GVI volunteer is a wonderful, immersive experience
October 14, 2024by: Guy DentonProgram: Volunteer on Construction Projects in NepalMy time spent of the construction programme in Nepal was everything I hoped it would be - suitably challenging, but with maximum reward when you see the difference it makes to the lives of others. Life as a GVI volunteer is a wonderful, immersive experience where you have the opportunity to learn about a different culture, make new friends and discover new things about the world and about yourself which will change your life forever.
