Open to both volunteers and interns, this program places you with a microfinance institution (MFI) in Nakuru, Kenya. Work with an MFI’s staff and local entrepreneurs to learn about various aspects: assessing the credit-worthiness of potential clients, carrying out daily tasks in the main office, and supporting financial literacy programs. A large emphasis is placed on the latter. After founding the Grameen Bank, a microfinance organization, Muhammed Yunus received a Nobel Prize. Since then, microfinance has garnered a lot of attention and thousands of other community development banks have sprung up. In Kenya, many MFIs have improved the lives of several small-scale entrepreneurs.
