The challenge:
Guaranda is one of Ecuador's poorest and least developed regions. Most indigenous people live in rural communities where poverty is over 40%; child malnutrition is at 48%, illiteracy is at 10%, and teenage pregnancy is at 26%. Five hundred years after colonization, globalization has the potential to be the final nail in the coffin for these historic cultures. Many young people move to the cities to support their families, and the native language (Kichwa) is at risk of extinction.

The solution:
We may only have a generation or two to ensure the survival of these cultures. Fortunately, some locals want to continue the traditions and rebuild cultural pride. With your help, we can work towards understanding the underlying patterns that could determine whether they can preserve and regenerate their culture while enabling them to become part of the global community in the 21st century.
