<h3>What inspired you to work for Christian American School of Guatemala (CAS)?</h3><p>I was looking for a job that would allow me to live in Guatemala. When you get to know them, you can't help but want to support them in any way you can. Those kids are why I go, even when it is a hard day.&nbsp;</p><h3>What is your favorite part of your job?</h3><p>My favorite part is all the relationships I have built with students and coworkers. I have learned a lot from these relationships and have so much more joy in my work day when I get hugs or have conversations from these students I have built bonds with.&nbsp;&nbsp;</p><h3>What challenges do you often face and how do you overcome them?</h3><p>One of the biggest challenges is the culture and language. You are exposed daily to new ideas and habits which makes you a more culturally aware person.&nbsp;</p><h3>What hopes do you have for the future for your organization?</h3><p>I hope for other teachers who are ready to work hard to improve the school. For new ideas about how we can better support our students and introduce them to new ideas and experiences. That CAS as a whole can keep growing in our quality of education we provide for students and the support we provide for teachers.&nbsp;</p><h3>What makes your organization easy to market to potential participants?</h3><p>CAS is a great way for young teachers to gain experience while exploring a new culture and country. The setup of the school allows for time for teachers to explore Guatemala and make memories while increasing their experience with English Language Learners. This can be a big resume builder.&nbsp;</p><h3>What do you hope participants take away from your programs?</h3><p>I hope they gained experience in teaching and deeper acceptance for other cultures. That they feel more well-rounded and have more experiences to bring to future events in life.&nbsp;</p><h3>How do you help support participants?</h3><p>I am a teacher who is willing to share my contact information to help answer any questions before moving and during their stay in Guatemala. I have been a guide to other teachers and help them navigate the different aspects that can be a little stressful if you were doing them on your own. It was so great to see the bonds between the older students and younger students form.</p><p></p></figcaption></figure><h3>Why is it important for people to travel abroad and experience new cultures?</h3><p>It is so important if we want to be more culturally intelligent. You gain a new acceptance for others and even aspects of your own culture. This is a great thing to do when you are young to help open your mind to the big picture of the world and not only where you are from.</p><h3>Why do you think learning a new language is important?</h3><p>Learning a new language is a great tool to help with inclusion of all people. When you learn a new language you are able to communicate and have deeper respect for others who are learning to speak your language. It helps you develop deeper relationships and just allows more doors to be open to you.</p><h3>What advice do you have for individuals thinking about going abroad?</h3><p>Do it! You will gain not only experience, but memories as well. Going abroad will teach you a lot about yourself, other cultures, what you stand for, and who you are as a person. I have never regretted one of my trips abroad. For example, visiting Guatemala, but also volunteering to teach at CAS.&nbsp;</p><h3>What hopes do you have for the future of international education?</h3><p>My hopes are that more people will take chances and go abroad and expose themselves to international education. This could be by teaching, or moving your children with you to an international school—anything that helps to build out cultural literacy.&nbsp;</p><h3>What qualities in program &amp; host community relations are important to you? (And your organization?)</h3><p>Community relations is a big encouragement for teachers. We have a support community from a local church called Access which really helps North American teachers make the adjustment to life in Guatemala. They are a sense of family for a lot of our teachers.</p>

Your coworkers become your best friends and support system.&nbsp;</p><h3>Describe a typical day at work for you.</h3><p>Every day we start with devotions, where we come together and pray for our school. Then we start daily classes. Every elementary grade has reading, writing, math, and Spanish every day. The other periods are switched between science, social studies, bible, art, PE, and computers. Kids have a snack and recess time in the morning, and then lunch and recess in the afternoon. Most teachers have 1-2 planning periods a day and 30 minutes at the end of the day after kids leave to set up for the next day.&nbsp;</p><h3>Why do you love being a teacher?</h3><p>I love teaching and being a positive role model for kids! I want them to feel safe at school, because for some kids, that is the only place where they are truly safe and happy. The pay is decent because living is cheaper in Guatemala. The breaks are perfect for traveling the country and seeing all the amazing places!</p><h3>How do you help support new teachers?</h3><p>For the new teachers that have come in the past couple years, I have tried to show them the ropes of living and teaching in Guatemala. I will take them around town and show them my favorite places to eat, shop, explore, etc. I will give them tips on lesson planning and setting up their classroom, and just preparing them for their first few weeks of school. I want them to feel comfortable here and for them to know that I am there for them!</p><h3>What are some of the most frequently asked questions you get from new teachers before they arrive?</h3><p>Everyone always asks what they should bring! I always say that it is hard to find a lot of common U.S. school resources in Guatemala, so to pack one suitcase full of kids books and supplies just to have. Pictures and things that have memories will help make the transition easier. It takes three to four months for you to really settle into your new environment, but go out and EXPLORE as much as you can! The year will go by so fast, so soak it all in.&nbsp;</p><h3>Why is teaching at Christian American School of Guatemala better than teaching anywhere else?</h3><p>You will have the chance to really grow as an educator and still have time to travel! I rarely have to take work home, which leaves my nights and weekends open for hanging out with friends and exploring.</p><h3>What is your favorite part about your job?</h3><p>Having a positive impact on children's lives every day! Seeing their smiling faces and getting hugs at all times of the day. I love seeing their growth during the year and watching them figure things out and enjoy learning.&nbsp;</p><h3>Why do you think it's important for people to travel abroad and experience new cultures?</h3><p>Traveling abroad has taught me so much about the world and about myself. I have grown more in the past three years living in Guatemala than I would have in 10 years in my home country. It has opened my eyes to the beauty of the world, and also the needs and struggles that the people here face every day. With this job, you do not need to know Spanish, however, you will want to learn the basics so you can try to communicate with the locals. Learning a new language will open your eyes and heart to the culture and help you really feel like you are a part of it.&nbsp;</p><h3>What advice do you have for individuals not sure if going abroad is a good idea?</h3><p>Going abroad is one of the best decisions you will ever make! You will learn so much about the world and about yourself and you will NOT regret it. Traveling will open your eyes to so much.</p><h3>What does meaningful travel mean to you?</h3><p>Meaningful travel is when you are experiencing things you couldn't experience in your home country. Trying new foods, seeing new places, meeting new people, anything that opens my eyes to the world around me and gives me a new appreciation for a different culture is meaningful travel to me!</p>

<h3>Describe a typical day at work.</h3><p>A typical day in Preschool is full of love and adventure. You start the day prepping your materials making sure you have everything needed before your students arrive, because once they arrive the adventure begins and the day flies by.</p><p>The day always starts with lots of hugs as they walk into the class. We start with Circle Time, beginning with prayer and discuss the activities of the day, routines are established, and goals set for the day. There&rsquo;s lots of singing and dancing.</p><figure class="awesome-image right-aligned" style="width: 50%;"><img style="" src="http://www5.goabroad.com/images/interviews/jennifer-de-garcia3-1606091218.jpg" alt="Jennifer de Garcia"><figcaption class="caption"><p>Feel the love...</p><p></p></figcaption></figure><p>Creative juices are flying throughout the day with all the art activities that take place so the children have a hands-on experience in learning English through what they are doing, through routines, play, and lots of movement. The children are always learning, even during snack time, from giving Thanks in prayer to learning vocabulary for the different foods they bring in.</p><p>Recess is a great way to see what they come up with on their own and how they interact and play freely with one another. It&rsquo;s always a joy when they ask you to play too. Then we come inside to wind down by washing our hands, refreshing ourselves with water, and unwinding through a good story.</p><p>Story time is a great part of the day where we can instill a love for reading; it&rsquo;s great seeing how the kids read the stories on their own, either to each other or their favorite stuffed animal, imitating their teacher and reliving their favorite part.</p><p>The books we use, which are from Amco, help students learn methods that develop a multi-competent profile that allows them to meet today&rsquo;s challenges and reach beyond the knowledge presented in books. It helps us reach the multiple intelligences of each child.</p><p>It&rsquo;s a great resource that we have been using for two years now and the support given through the editorial makes teaching so much easier.
