<h3>What inspired you to found Caribbean Reef Buddy?</h3><p>I've seen many changes to our marine-scape over the past 30 years as a diver. In the past five years we've seen much more being written and filmed which has created an awareness in the public consciousness that if we want to preserve this environment we cannot rely on governments or corporations to do it for us. We have to do something, however small, ourselves.</p><p>I saw in 2014 an opportunity to establish CRB and to bring to a new generation of divers an opportunity to work with dive and marine science professionals to work on projects which add value to the local environment by increasing awareness of the current conditions, but also on what we can all do. Over this period we've been involved in some fantastic projects, and met some truly amazing young people too. Being able to pass on my experience to them has been motivational and inspiring, and through CRB I can have greater confidence that the youth of today will do something about protecting our planet.</p><figure class="awesome-image centered" style=""><img style="" src="http://www5.goabroad.com/images/interviews/4-1582796077.jpg" alt="Marine biologist shows off her Lionfish catch"><figcaption class="caption"><p>Dr Yara and her first Lionfish catch in Carriacou</p><p></p></figcaption></figure><h3>Describe a typical day at work.</h3><p>During the program, a typical day starts at about 7am. We take over the dive shop in Hillsborough for the project period and so each day we need to set everything up for CRB. By 8 we start to see the volunteers arriving, and we run through the briefings and get the equipment set up. We'll either be training or participating on the project. Either way we'll probably be in the water. We get the boat out for our first in-water session by 9am.</p><p>Returning for a spot of lunch, we clear away all of our equipment and start the afternoon off with some analysis - what did we see? what did we do?. We might also be doing some debriefs with the volunteers and team. The afternoon is also used a lot for theory development as we move through the projects.</p><p>As the day winds down, a beer or a rum punch is a great way to progress into dinner. We'll join the volunteers for dinner a couple of times a week. We like the whole small team social side of things too. But I tend to leave them alone when they want to head out to the bars, as they don't want 'ScubaDad' cramping their style.<br></p><h3>Why do you do what you do?</h3><p>Because I love it! I'm fortunate enough to have had a career where I worked for 25 years and earned pretty good money. I hated the career, but it paid the bills and afforded me the opportunity to now be able to do something that I love.</p><h3>What is your favorite part of your job?</h3><p>The look on the face of a new diver as they see the underwater world for the first time. The look on the face of an experienced diver when they see the marine-scape the way I see it for the first time too...&nbsp; Both are priceless!</p><figure class="awesome-image centered" style=""><img style="" src="http://www5.goabroad.com/images/interviews/3-1582796294.jpg" alt="Paradise Beach"><figcaption class="caption"><p>One of the best views on the island! Paradise Beach</p><p></p></figcaption></figure><h3>How do you use your education and international background in your current role?</h3><p>I've been involved in training and education for nearly 20 years, and as a dive pro for the last 10.&nbsp; I'm not a scientist, nor do I pretend to be one, but what I can do is break down some fairly complicated processes and make delivering them fun. Try my rescue diver course if you want proof!</p><p>We also have a balancing act to play here in the islands. On one hand, we're experienced and well educated and have the opportunity to collect data and analyse it. On the other hand we're foreigners in a region where foreigners have exploited people aggressively in the past. So we have to work closely with the community to bring them with us on the journey as opposed to being perceived as 'telling' them what they must do. This is the biggest challenge, but also the most rewarding aspect when it works.</p><h3>What challenges do you often face and how do you overcome them?</h3><p>Most challenges come about from people miss-understanding each other. Whether it be our approach, our motives or things that we have said. Therefore the key to overcoming these issues comes in two parts.</p><p>The first is to accept that there are only two things in the world that you can control. The first is YOUR thoughts and the second is YOUR actions. Outside of this you have no control (but can perhaps influence).<br></p><p>The second is to accept that people may not see things as you do, so it is important to communicate well, communicate clearly and have patience with people who are not comprehending what you're saying or doing. If you're able to communicate with someone in a manner which resonated with them, and you can bring them with you, most challenges become great opportunities.</p><h3>What are some current projects you are working on?</h3><p>I'm leading the project for coral regeneration. We have a small nursery here in Carriacou where we're growing new coral heads. The project involves a lot of diving in the nursery as we tend for our little babies and eventually plant them back on the reefs.</p><p>I'm also one of the instructors setting up the apex predator monitoring project, which is really exciting! We know we have sharks in the water, but because Man is their greatest threat, we don't see them in the water. Capturing them on video and seeing them in the habitat is thrilling.</p><figure class="awesome-image centered" style=""><img style="" src="http://www5.goabroad.com/images/interviews/2-1582796255.jpg" alt="Diver with rebreather"><figcaption class="caption"><p>Rebreather diving too. Listen, and most importantly enjoy.&nbsp;&nbsp;</p><p>While the program is an educational one, where you will have the opportunity to learn a huge amount about our marine environment and about coral conservation, it&rsquo;s also an experiential program. The experience you'll gain is about science and diving, but it&rsquo;s also about different cultures and different ways of living or seeing things. It&rsquo;s really good to make sure you gain the most from your experience by relaxing into it, listening to what your instructors, your fellow volunteers, and the people around you have to say, and enjoying the opportunity to soak it all in.</p><p>Oh, and be careful with the over-proof rum! It bites!</p><h3>What makes Caribbean Reef Buddy special?</h3><p>It&rsquo;s a combination of the people and the unique nature of the island. The projects we're supporting are being run by other people all over the world. CRB is unique in the way that the people here care. Not only care for the projects and the marine environment, but also care for you. They care that you're having a great time. They care that you're developing and learning lots.&nbsp; They care that you want to contribute to the success of the program.</p><p>The island is also unique in the Caribbean. Whilst its not mud huts and shanty towns, it is a largely undeveloped island. We have no mass tourism, no shopping malls and no cruise ship terminals. We're the authentic Caribbean as it was perhaps 40 years ago. Grenada and Carriacou are also blessed with the warmest and most friendly people you could hope to meet.&nbsp; The local pastime is called Liming - which basically involves sitting in the shade of a Walnut tree and passing the time of day with your friends...&nbsp; That&rsquo;s a standard of living I aspire to!</p><h3>Why should someone choose Caribbean Reef Budy over competitors?</h3><p>A combination of the team we've assembled here in Carriacou. The experience, the professionalism, and the diligence too. None of our team are here "just for the season", as we've been together for a few years now and are committed to the projects we're working with you to deliver. If you're considering another organisation as them how long their team have been together and involved!</p><p>More importantly though is the diversity and flexibility of the approach we have developed. The team is an excellent balance of professional educators and marine biologists. This means we have the experience to make sure we can deliver the program in a way which makes sense to you, and which means you can leave here with a deep appreciation for what we're doing and know you made a profound difference. It may feel small and futile now. But if enough people make a small change, it doesn't take long for it to be massive!</p><p>We are part of a network of organisations committed to coral regeneration globally. There are nearly 2,000 organisations participating. Whilst CRB's coral nursery is currently quite small, we might be able to plant 100 new healthy heads of coral each year. If every organisation in the network plants 100 new healthy coral heads each year, this means 200,000 new corals are planted each year!&nbsp; And as the nurseries grow and more organisations join, this number will continue to grow.</p><h3>What advice do you have for individuals thinking about going abroad?</h3><p>Do it!&nbsp;&nbsp;</p><p>I was one of those people who left college and got into a career. I worked hard and got the mortgage, the car and everything else that society says is what we should do. I wished however that I'd taken a year or two out to travel and discover a little more about myself and the world around me.</p><p>If you have that opportunity, take it with both hands as it will likely change your perspective and life forever.</p><h3>What does meaningful travel mean to you?</h3><p>Meaningful Travel? To me this is the notion that travel has a purpose and that you gain something from the journey you're making. Sometimes we want to get away and just sit by a pool for 10 days. The purpose is to recharge and relax, but it hasn't got any meaning to it. Now whenever I travel I try to learn something new. Whether it be about the destination or about a new activity. Being active and learning something new keeps the world a fascinating place.</p>

<h3>What inspired you to work for <a href=https://www.goabroad.com/providers/caribbean-reef-buddy-1 rel="" target="_self" class="link"><ins>Caribbean Reef Buddy</ins></a>?</h3>
<p>I created Caribbean Reef Buddy with my partner as we wanted an opportunity to share what we love about this tiny corner of the world. The Caribbean Sea is under threat from a great many angles, and as the Blue Planet series highlighted, creating awareness is a very powerful tool.  So in support of this initiative we're creating ongoing awareness, whilst doing our little bit to protect and develop the reef ecosystem here in Carriacou.</p>
<h3>Describe a typical day at work.</h3>
<p>For half of the week I am stuck in the office responding to emails or making the logistics for the operation work. The other half the week I'm out on the boat by 9 am with volunteers and clients and we're diving! We might be just having some fun, or we might be training. I teach everything from Open Water to technical diving, as well as the conservation activities too.<br><br>Each week I look forward to being able to head out to the coral nursery and see our babies growing. Like any baby, they need a lot of nurturing when they're young, but when we see the results in our outplant sites, it becomes very very rewarding.</p>
<h3>Why do you do what you do?</h3>
<p>There is a very simple answer, I love what I do! I'm fortunate enough to have found a role that I really enjoy and it provides me with the lifestyle I want. Each day I seize the opportunities of the day. It helps when the environment is so beautiful!<br><br>The biggest thrill I get each day is seeing the smiling faces of new divers who get to see what we see every day. I love being able to pass on my knowledge and understanding while watching people develop, learn, and improve.</p>

<h3>What is your favorite part of your job?</h3>
<p>It's the people's side of things that is my favorite part of my job. I'm naturally an introvert, but enjoy social situations. Being here with Caribbean Reef Buddy means I get the opportunity to meet lots of new people all the time, most of which are really cool and we get to hang out and talk about diving, travel, and living life on a tiny tropical island.<br><br>On top of that, it's seeing that we are slowly making a difference! I love to dive over at Jack-a-dan island, where the reef over the past five years has really started to recover. I love seeing the schools of parrot fish there now.</p>
<h3>How do you use your education and international background in your current role?</h3>
<p>I'm not a marine biologist, but I have a few of those around me. I am a professional educator and have a wealth of real world experiences that help me shape how we convey a message.</p>
<p>I'm also a pragmatist, and so stay away from the idealized view of how things "should" work and dig deep into the weeds of how they "do" or "don't work" instead. I focus attention on the competing elements of life which means things may not work as we might want them to. Being able to get this across to particularly young people is critical to being able to develop workable new ideas.</p>
<h3>What challenges do you often face and how do you overcome them?</h3>
<p>People don't like change and we see that all across the globe and in all walks of life. However, the only real constant in life is change. The biggest challenge we face on a daily basis is resistance to change, whether that be a process or a safety requirement or an abstract idea.</p>
<p>Being able to understand the reasons why someone does something a particular way and to work with them to appreciate a different perspective either enlightens them or me. Either way, we move forward and win.</p>

<h3>What are some current projects you are working on?</h3>
<p>Our newest project is in the area of coral propagation. We're working on micro-fragmenting and growing hard/boulder corals. These were hit hard by the bout of SCTLD which came through the region in 2021, and so I'm excited to see how this methodology might help us to help the reef recover. On top of this I work closely with those participants interested in professional dive training and experiences.</p>
<h3>What advice would you tell your pre-travel self?</h3>
<p>Get out and travel! Don't leave it too late and don't think of it as a waste of money. By broadening your perspective by seeing different parts of the world you'll get a better understanding of what we can achieve if we put our minds to it.</p>
<p>Also, you will see what options exist out there for a way of living which is different from the way our parents may have lived. I've never worked as hard in my life as I do now, but my rewards are my happiness as I'm getting to live the best version of my life!</p>
<h3>What makes <a href=https://www.goabroad.com/providers/caribbean-reef-buddy-1 rel="" target="_self" class="link"><ins>Caribbean Reef Buddy</ins></a> special?</h3>
<p>We're small, tactical, and we're very much focused on the learning aspects. We don't have grandiose ideas of changing the world from Carriacou. Our vision is to create a better understanding and awareness within each person we encounter, and for them to share their experiences. This way the message is personal, is real and the response is more genuine.</p>

<h3>Why should someone choose your organization over competitors?</h3>
<p>Because we're small and will always strive to remain small, we're able to be nimble and to work closely with our volunteers and clients. We make sure they have the best experience they can. We work closely with accommodation providers and with excellent dive operations, so we can be sure you're safe and well looked after all throughout your stay.<br><br>Our accommodation is in a small hotel, which means you're not required to cook and your bedding gets changed for you. We use a PADI 5 Star/SSI Diamond dive operation that ensures the boat and the equipment are in tip top shape. We use experienced instructors who are able to provide best in class training. More importantly, we practice what we preach, and live here year round doing that.</p>
<h3>What hopes do you have for the future for <a href=https://www.goabroad.com/providers/caribbean-reef-buddy-1 rel="" target="_self" class="link"><ins>Caribbean Reef Buddy</ins></a>?</h3>
<p>I hope that we can continue to offer the same small, bespoke training services to people young and old who want to learn something more about the ocean and how we can monitor and protect it. I'd like to be a regional hub for information and understanding of the techniques which can be used here which work, and which can be replicated again and again.</p>
<h3>What is your organization's mission and how do you continue to work toward it?</h3>
<p>To be regarded as a regional center of excellence for the education of practical coral propagation and to be considered to be making a positive difference. We'll do this each day by continuing to strive to teach about the corals we love. Also, by continuing to outplant as many healthy coral fragments as we can.</p>

<h3>What do you hope participants take away from your programs?</h3>
<p>The main thing I hope that people can take away from a program like ours is the understanding that we can all make a difference. The old saying is that from small acorns mighty oaks grow, and it's through our understanding of the importance to our way of life the oceans play, then we will start to increase the spotlight on what needs to be done.</p>
<p>I can't change the world. You can't change the world. But together WE might have a chance to effect change, which could go someway to changing the world.</p>
<h3>Why is it important for people to travel abroad and experience new cultures?</h3>
<p>We can get stuck in our own homes and in our own lives believing there is only one path and one potential future. Being able to travel will broaden your perspective and give you some rich experiences you can use to make better decisions about the path you might want to take in the future.</p>
<p>Experiencing the difficulties other people face around the world and how they overcome these difficulties can make us appreciate the lives that we all live. We can see how fortunate we are to have the opportunities we have.</p>
<h3>What does meaningful travel mean to you?</h3>
<p>Travel is nice, going on vacation is nice, but what do you see when you go on vacation? You get to see a resort or a city, some tourist attractions and buy some souvenirs too. When you come home, it's back to what you were doing before.</p>
<p>Meaningful travel is more about your headspace. It’s more about how your travel is used as an opportunity to challenge your perspective and gain a better understanding of how things are, as opposed to how you believe they should be. Coming back from meaningful travel typically results in you thinking about how you can improve, how you can develop, and where you'll go next.</p>

Incredible Experience

My experience with Caribbean Reef Buddy was nothing short of incredible. Everything about this program was incredible to me and I could not recommend it enough to those seeking to get involved with the underwater world. I applied to this program as a Freshman studying Marine Biology in college and was a bit anxious about spending three weeks in Grenada. However, this anxiety quickly faded as I got to know everyone involved with the program. Everyone involved is unbelievably welcoming, knowledgeable, and truly want you to enjoy your time working with them. Speaking of which, the work I did with CRB was truly rewarding and I felt as though I was truly helping to protect Carriacou's local reefs. In addition, I gained invaluable field experience in the realm of marine science which has and will continue to aid in future endeavors with work. I also went into this program as an open water diver and while partaking in this program received my advanced open water scuba certification as well as deep diver specialty certification. Gary is an incredible dive instructor, the best I have ever had, and puts safety as an utmost priority. He taught me invaluable skills in the water and I am a more confident diver than ever thanks to his guidance. For those wondering about the diving itself, the reefs in Carriacou are gorgeous and are full of photography opportunities for those interested in the field. I will say that much of the marine life there is on the smaller size so macro photographers should be excited. I got to see so many incredible creatures and experience so much during my time with CRB. I truly could not recommend it enough.

Caribbean Reef Buddy with Deefer Diving: Experience in Carriacou

The work I got to do with Caribbean Reef Buddy, volunteering on the coral reef, and helping to identify coral species was truly special. The diving instructors at Deefer Diving were incredibly knowledgeable and supportive throughout all of the training and they provided a lot of one-on-one instruction, even in a group setting. In my spare time, I also hiked on the island which was amazing and everyone I met was very welcoming. I really benefited from the experience and I'd recommend the program to people of any age with an interest in adventure.

Caribbean Reef Buddy!

My experience was great! Though at the beginning I was a bit hesitant to get in the water and do the training activities once I was doing them it wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. The staff here are really supportive and are willing to accommodate any needs people have. They are willing to work at your own pace while still pushing you to do your best. After all the training was complete I felt more comfortable diving and it made the experience more enjoyable. The dive sites are really cool as well. There are many different locations not too far away from the shop. I would recommend this dive shop to people, it was a great experience and I wish to come back.

My Caribbean Reef Buddy Experience

The team at Caribbean Reef Buddy and Deefer Diving made learning how SCUBA dive fun and exciting. As a newbie, having kind, knowledgeable, and confident instructors made the process easy. They answer all questions with enthusiasm. Their goal is to help people reach theirs. Not only was diving a fantastic experience, but the location of Carriacou was perfect. The work being done with the reefs in the area was extremely interesting to those who have a knack for marine sciences.
If you have ever wanted to scuba dive, this is a great team to start with.

Experience of a Lifetime in Carriacou!

The staff at Caribbean Reef Buddy and Deefer Diving are absolutely phenomenal. They are patient, understanding, incredibly safe, knowledgable, and they're so much fun. We had a fairly large group, and they were able to accommodate everybody's specialized needs and skill levels. They gave great recommendations for adventures to explore outside of diving as well. This was truly the experience of a lifetime, and I could not recommend them enough! Thank you to all of the staff at Deefer Diving for giving your 110% every single day. Your hard work and dedication is seen and appreciated.

So many things to see!

There were so many things to see, swarms of fish, tons of coral varieties, sponges, eels, turtles, and even a few nudibranchs. Oh, and you forget you are supposed to be identifying various predators. Many staff members had hawkeyes to point out very well-hidden or camouflaged shrimp, eels, and the rare Frogfish. Great teaching on land to prep for coral, fish id, and substrates. Patient with my questions too. Fun to find micro-fragments coral and prep it for the coral nursery replanting. They would demonstrate, you do, and we fasten them to the tables!

Diving in Paradise

After some planes, planes, and more planes you arrive at this tiny island in the middle of the Caribbean that is filled with amazing people and nature that is a must-visit. Everyone at the dive shop is professional, knowledgeable, and friendly making for a great and worthwhile experience. I stayed for 2 weeks in July for Lionfish management and reef monitoring and learned so much about the local reef environment and its challenges. The diving was top tier with so much beautiful marine life. I cannot wait to go back!! 

I wrote a review but realized I only spoke about Deefer Diving, the dive shop that works with Caribbean Reef Buddy. But I wanted to make sure I wrote a review about them too because they are an amazing organization! When looking for a program and where I wanted to volunteer, I read reviews about other places that didn't really offer any educational value. This is not the case here! I learned SO much and really felt like I made an impact helping their marine conservation work! They are very organized too!

Excellent Caribbean scuba programming

This is my fourth year bringing college students down for dive training. This year, we also included a project week wherein students applied all of their new skills in a reef monitoring and coral out-planting research. Staff here have always been very accommodating of various skill levels and interests of participants and provide flexibility in our programming. We are super excited to partner with them on this new research project.
