We wanted to remove the business element out of volunteering groups and ensure the possibility of volunteering is open to more across the globe with lower overall fees. Atlas Volunteers was founded in 2017 to create low cost, meaningful volunteer placements in Kwahu, Ghana. We wanted to remove the business element out of volunteering groups and ensure the possibility of volunteering is open to more across the globe with lower overall fees. We are ran by a mix of British and Ghanaian staff who all met whilst in different volunteering roles in Ghana. The work we do is currently focused around the Abetifi (Kwahu East) district, a semi rural area perched on top of the Kwahu mountain plateau with breath taking views of the surrounding rainforest. Our aim is to improve the district and the resident's lives, little by little, in any way we can. We focus primarily on Education, Renovation and Sports starting off with improving the lives of the local children t...

Great experience
by: Laura Sexton - United KingdomProgram: Low Cost, Meaningful Volunteer Placements from $65 in GhanaI have to admit I was out of my comfort zone and a bit apprehensive to travel to Ghana at first but I had the most amazing time. I loved that there was different projects to choose from like the teaching in schools and ecobricking (sadly turtle conservation wasn’t there when I was). The vibe from the locals and all the staff was amazing and I couldn’t fault them. If you’re looking to push yourself out of your comfort zone this is a great opportunity.
Overall a great experience
by: Pascale BProgram: Low Cost, Meaningful Volunteer Placements from $65 in GhanaOverall a great experience, the month I spent there went by way too fast. For school it's better to stay longer if possible, otherwise you have to leave right when you start to get to know all the kids.
This experience was very enriching
by: Yona RProgram: Low Cost, Meaningful Volunteer Placements from $65 in GhanaThis experience was very enriching, it is a great opportunity to discover a new culture and to live in a community. I was there for three months and it was ideal for me because I had enough time to work on different placements (education and environmantal cause mainly), to see each project evolve and also adapt in a new country.

What inspired you to travel abroad?
I have seen first hand the fact that some volunteering experiences have become very business orientated. Sam, who manages Atlas, and I were both so keen to put the passion and development back into development projects and make sure that the local community is benefitting fully from volunteers being there.

I had just graduated high school and had no idea of what I wanted to do with my life. I didn't want to continue studying right away and decided to look for volunteer programs around the world, to help people while getting to know different cultures.

For me, going abroad means many things: getting to know a new culture, a different continent (if that is the case), different people, and having the chance to learn from the people we meet. These are all things that have given me a giant curiosity about what exists beyond our comfort zones. This curiosity and interest made me dive into an adventure abroad.
