Get the chance to work with injured animals from the Amazon rainforest or at a shelter for sea turtles in one of our internships abroad. At the Institute for Global Studies, we help students gain invaluable work experience in their field from an international context. Wildlife shelter work can bring out the best of human nature. Connecting with abandoned animals instills a sense of accomplishment that few tasks provide. Apart from bonding with animals, gain insight into local communities and their interactions with wildlife in their area. Meet with students, residents, and the general public to learn about their customs. Common duties include food preparation, checking in animals, interpretation to the public, medical assistance, and community outreach.

India is the world’s largest democracy and is considered a newly industrialized country. Yet despite its large workforce and immense growth, India continues to face the hurdles of poverty, illiteracy, malnutrition, and inadequate public healthcare. Funds for health in India have long focused largely on medical services, reflected in a lack of modern public health regulations and delivery of services. Travel to Delhi, India, the second most populous city on the planet. Join NGOs working to implement social reforms and improve public health outcomes through educational campaigns and trainings with emphasis on the spread of HIV/AIDS in India, tuberculosis, and management of infectious diseases. Learn about key public health challenges such as low rates of immunization, poor sanitation and waste management, and unsafe drinking water. Understand the lingering impact of India’s caste system and challenges in implementing public health initiatives within a culturally and linguistically diverse population.

The project was created to supply essential medical treatment to vulnerable residents in India. Participating in this internship offers an invaluable experience to students specializing in medicine or nursing. They gain unparalleled exposure to an international healthcare system, often far more in-depth than the exposure they get in their home country. On the other hand, specialized medical volunteers gain insight into new techniques, allowing them to distinguish themselves from their peers. Medical internship assignments are based in a large hospital in South Delhi, an area close to some of the best shops and markets in the city and just 15 minutes from the volunteer house. Interns are paired with a local doctor, nurse, or other medical professional throughout their placement. While the internship is mostly observation-based, they have the opportunity to shadow and give basic assistance to patients.
