In the developing world, there are more opportunities to work inside traditional classrooms than in Western countries where increased regulations make it prohibitive. Institute for Global Studies has placed teacher’s aides in colorful locations such as Costa Rica, Brazil, Thailand, and Fiji. Work as a personal assistant to the assigned classroom teacher. They are most helpful when the class breaks up into small groups, and they can work with students one-on-one or in small groups to facilitate the lesson plan. The ability to speak a native level of English is vital in this placement. It helps interns formulate lesson plans, teach the basics of English, and facilitate conversation and grammar with young students. Overseeing field trips is another fun duty. Taking kids into museums and on local excursions can be a great experience for an intern supervisor. Every day is different and the chance to impact young lives is unsurpassed. IGS provides homestay options to foster authentic immersion into the host country. Participants may also opt to stay in a private apartment.

Children in the Philippines begin learning English in grade one, so it is not surprising that most of the population can speak and understand English. The benefits of learning English from a native speaker are inspiring for young children. Volunteer for the Visayans places volunteers in rural elementary schools an hour outside Tacloban City to assist local teachers with their English classes and other subjects. These volunteers can experience living in rural villages and will observe the true meaning of "community." An alternative to teaching in the rural setting is to teach non-formal education classes in Tacloban. These classes work with out-of-school youth and unemployed adults interested in learning the basic subjects taught in public schools and skills training. Volunteers can be role models for these struggling teenagers and adults. The non-formal education sector lacks teachers who can conduct regular classes. Volunteers can organize and schedule classes daily and have a profound effect on these students' lives. Teaching English experience or TEFL certification is preferred but not mandatory.

Join this hands-on, personalized internship and help provide low-income Indigenous communities with greater opportunities through teaching English. THE CHALLENGE In rural Ecuador, limited resources lead to poor education: 1 in 10 are illiterate, and only 24% finish middle school. Few speak English. With 40% of the population in poverty, English can open opportunities such as tourism. We’ve seen strong demand for our weekly classes—some walk over an hour to attend—but a lasting solution must be more regular and accessible. THE SOLUTION We’re seeking interns eager to apply their English teaching, TEFL, or TESOL skills in five nearby communities. You’ll get support from our team to visit schools, meet teachers, design programs, and deliver engaging lessons mainly for children. Gain hands-on experience while making a real difference and creating a brighter future. OUR METHODOLOGY Our internships use Design Thinking to co-create solutions with local partners. You’ll learn to observe, ideate, and prototype in real contexts, building skills while driving sustainable change. During, before and after your stay—you can explore Ecuador, from the Amazon rainforest to the Galápagos Islands.

A Guide to Gap Year Teaching Abroad
Popular Locations
So, you will be teaching English abroad in a few months. But where? Having the chance to go anywhere in the world makes the decision process so much harder. We get it! But we’re here to help you out, and give you a few ideas. Here are the most popular countries for teaching English abroad gap years..
Spain is one of the most popular countries for gappers to teach English in Europe. With the right program, you will be teaching in international public schools, giving private lessons during the week and spending the weekends at the beach, eating churros and sipping on sangria. That is, when you’re not visiting amazing cathedrals and museums, shopping after 20:00 or enjoying the nightlife with the locals in Madrid or Barcelona.
China is a country with rich culture, history, and an expanding English teaching market. It also offers the possibility of a gap year teaching abroad without any special certifications (not even TEFL)—BUT we highly encourage getting your certification for more and better job options. There are plenty of location and school options for all types of teachers: English, Math, Science, or even a Sports Coach. But, let’s not be “all work and no play”—after all, it makes everybody a dull boy. While you’re eating amazing Peking Duck, some of us will be only dreaming about it, and wondering what’s it like to see the magnificence of the Great Wall of China, visit the Forbidden City, or gawk at the Imperial Palace. And the pandas? You cannot complete your trip without a panda experience.
Mexico might not be too far away if you’re from the US, but it’s most definitely a different world worth exploring. If you’re a native English speaker and have a TEFL certificate, you can easily get a work permit and start teaching. No matter if you’re a beach bum, city person, or outdoor enthusiast, Mexico has it all! After you’ve had a taste of the real Mexican food, Chipotle will become history. Chilaquiles, tacos, guacamole, enchiladas, or world class seafood. The list goes on. Feel like doing some traveling? Then hop down on a weekend trip to Costa Rica!
