Community Water Management Internship in Ecuador

Join this hands-on internship and help low-income Indigenous communities access clean drinking water through education and infrastructure projects. THE CHALLENGE Safe drinking water is a human right, yet nearby communities face contamination, deforestation, and poor storage and filtration. Many rely on open streams carrying soil and chemicals from uphill farming. With no filtration and little storage, gastrointestinal issues are common, and water shut-offs occur during summer or pipe breaks. THE SOLUTION Addressing this water crisis requires a comprehensive approach—from public health initiatives to domestic filtration, reforestation, and infrastructure improvements. With the guidance of our experienced team, you’ll engage with the local community to identify and implement sustainable solutions that ensure long-term access to clean, secure drinking water. OUR METHODOLOGY Our internships use Design Thinking to co-create solutions with local partners. You’ll learn to observe, ideate, and prototype in real contexts, building skills while driving sustainable change. On weekends—or before and after your stay—you can explore Ecuador, from the Amazon to the Galápagos.

A Guide to Gap Year in South America

Best Countries

The most ambitious gapper may hit all twelve South American countries! But if you don’t have time, we’ve picked two that should top your list.

Peru. South America gap years in Peru are filled with nature. Take a hike in the green and lush Amazon jungle or scramble around the rocky landscape that surrounds Lake Titicaca. But the height of the gap year in South America (11,000 feet!!) is the city of Cusco. Once a great Inca empire, Cusco is known today for its handicraft markets and hilly colonial cobblestone streets—and, of course, the nearby Machu Picchu. This lost city of the Incas is truly an icon of pre-Columbian civilization and not to be missed on gap year programs in South America!

Argentina. In Argentina, some gappers work on conservation projects in the rugged Patagonia desert. Others settle in Buenos Aires to live in the “Paris of South America,” a city known for art and fashion. The Portenos, as Buenos Aires residents are called, consider nightlife a true lifestyle. If you get thirsty from all that dancing, visit the must-see landmark, Iguazu Falls—the earth’s largest waterfall system.

Life changing experience

November 24, 2025by: Luisa Rulfo - MexicoProgram: Baret Scholars Gap Year Program

The most eye opening experience, questioning everything you go through, you knew, discovering yourself among a cohort of brilliant and unique minds. Every virtue is welcomed and supported to the fullest. We scholars discovered the impact of the frase "If you want something you just have to do it." We unlearned and relearned how to perceive life, how to grow, how to move forward, how to relate to people, how to experience life to the fullest. I believe the knowledge I gained from this experience gave me years of lived life worth of knowledge, unreachable without something like Baret.
