The Ultimate Personalized Gap Year Experience

Are you looking for an epic adventure that will change your life forever? Then look no further! This Ultimate Gap Year Experience is unique; you will be transported to four different projects across southern Africa, working on the front lines of conservation and connecting with local and expert professionals who are just as passionate about conservation work as you are. One day, you could be releasing pangolins rescued from poachers back into the wild, and then learning bush skills from a master tracker and tracking a herd of elephants the next. You will be part of the conservation community, listening to stories of the land from the locals. Completely immersed, you will see what it’s like to live and breathe meaningful African conservation. It’s not always easy to nurse injured animals back to health, but the reintroduction, monitoring, and seeing them thrive afterward is a memory that will last a lifetime. This program is also tailored to how much time you have, your skills, and what you would like to achieve.

World Explorers Program - English Language Volunteer Abroad

Our host families volunteer to open their homes to you and welcome you in as a member of their families. This means they truly want to share their language and culture with you while learning about your language and culture. Instead of paying for language courses, our host families believe that hosting a native English speaker is a better way to learn the language and make friendships that last forever. In exchange for room and board, you are required to tutor your hosts in English for 15 hours per week. It’s your job to assess the level of each family member upon arrival and work closely with them to meet their individual needs. We will offer tutoring materials to help you prepare for the lessons before departing. But remember, you don’t need to stay indoors doing grammar exercises out of a textbook. Everyday conversation is oftentimes the best way to become fluent. We encourage you to learn the local language as well!

A Guide to Gap Year Programs in Africa

Best Countries

With so many countries to choose from for Africa gap years, how can you possibly narrow it down? Rest assured, Africa has something for everyone.

South Africa. Called the Rainbow Nation, South Africa boasts stunning landscapes, incredible wildlife, and a complicated past. Watch a Springboks game, visit the Garden Route, camp under the stars, wander around Cape Town, or go on safari. Don’t forget to talk to the locals! They’ll be able to give you the inside scoop on the lesser-known places to visit or activities to do.

Rwanda. Nestled in the heart of East Africa, Rwanda is the place to be for those looking for an experience off the well-worn path. It is not only home to some of the world’s only remaining mountain gorillas, but also to the newly formalized 141 mile Congo-Nile Trail that runs along Lake Kivu. Hikers and bikers make their way down the trail through local villages and coffee farms.

Morocco. For those interested in exploring northern Africa and learning more about its fusion of African and Arab cultures, Morocco is a vibrant place that has it all: cities, mountains, deserts, the ocean. Be prepared to drink tea. Lots of delicious mint tea.

What a journey to embark upon!!

December 05, 2025by: Caeley Hattle - New ZealandProgram: Quest Africa: Mixed Core Program - Forge Your Future
10

Quest was one of the hardest things I have ever had to do, and yet the most fulfilling, grounding and amazing one. The activities and practical skills and experiences were vast and interesting and exciting and very useful for the future. But Quest was so much more than just a whirlwind of good times. It taught me strength and courage and how sometimes life can be so much harder than expected, but I am always capable of getting through it. Quest showed me grit and determination and success. And that success doesn’t mean a place I get to but a way of living. Living everyday in discipline and steps, in focus and contentment. The development I saw in myself and the Questors around me, I know we will forever have that as our core base to stand on. I still daily thing about what Quest taught me and how I could be making my next moves. I absolutely loved it, the awesome parts and the tough ones, each teaching me a different lesson. I absolutely would recommend Quest in a heartbeat, to anyone who is ready to step into the world and find and form the best version of themselves. It was so incredibly fun and fulfilling! Very grateful and blessed to partake in Quest for my gap year. If you’re still weighing it up, DO IT!! You’ll thank yourself later for making that first step out of your comfort zone. Thank you Quest Africa ❤️‍🔥
