2. Cordoba
Cordoba is home to six universities (including the oldest university in the country, The National University of Córdoba), making it a booming college town. Because of the heavy student population, the city has a variety of festivals, including Carnival, which involves water balloons, Friends Day, and Spring Day.
Don’t think that the younger student crowd means less culture though! In 2006 the city was awarded the title of Cultural Capital of the Americas. 4. Mendoza
Mendoza and the surrounding area is full of hundreds of wineries, making this location great for our wine expert travelers. You can spend an entire day winery hopping and learning about the history and culture of the area. The Fiesta Nacional de la Vendimia (The National Grape Harvest Festival) occurs each March, so you’ll get to participate in even more awesome winery activities.
When you’re not teaching and if you’re looking to escape the city for a bit, the Reserva Natural Villavicencio is nearby. Corrientes’ location on the riverbanks of Parana makes it a picturesque location for teaching English in Argentina. The city’s name literally translates to currents, named for its strong river currents. 6. San Miguel de Tucuman
San Miguel de Tucuman is a very historically important city in Argentina. The city houses Casa de Tucumán, the site of the declaration of independence of Argentina on July 9, 1816. The gorgeous colonial-style house is mostly a recreation, as most of the building had to be demolished due to poor condition. The room where the declaration was signed is still original though and can be toured!
The rest of your free time in the city can be spent anywhere from world-class theaters to hip bars to cool museums. One of the city’s largest museums is dedicated to the sugar industry, a major industry for the Tucuman province. As an added bonus, the city is also close to the Quilmes Ruins, thought to be the largest pre-Columbian settlement in the country. The ruins date back as far as 850 A.D.
