The Best Advice for Going to College Abroad

Published on July 13, 2023

It was my senior year of high school, and a group of classmates and I were discussing our college options. A friend of mine announced he was moving to London for his undergraduate degree. I remember being shocked but also impressed by his curiosity and bravery for wanting to embark on his collegiate career in another country.

Prior to that moment, I never considered going to college abroad. At that time I only had dreams of spending a semester in Spain—something that I accomplished during my first degree. I, like many other students, wanted that authentic American college experience which I received at Clemson University where I studied Spanish and International Health.

During my time in Spain, I visited London, England and immediately knew I had to move. Once arriving back to the states, I researched countless London universities and applied to five. I received offers for all and that was the beginning of my London journey.

Is getting a degree abroad worth it?

I attended graduate school at Queen Mary University of London and it was the best decision I made for my graduate education. I was seeking a true global classroom experience and I personally had no desire to attend grad school in the US.

Getting a degree abroad was also the better financial decision. The one American program I applied to was over $80k per academic year. My British program was a one-year program that was around £50k including housing.

In America, an undergraduate degree is four years and most graduate degrees are two years. Not only was going to college abroad cost efficient, I obtained my degree in half the time. Needless to say, getting a degree abroad is worth it!

6 tips for going to college abroad

Heading off to college is an exciting and transformative experience, and choosing to study abroad takes that adventure to the next level. Going to college abroad offers unique opportunities for personal growth, cultural immersion, and expanding academic horizons. Navigating the process of studying in a foreign country can be daunting, but with my top advice for going to college abroad, you can ensure an unforgettable and rewarding adventure.

1. Learn some of the local language before you arrive

Deciding whether to pursue college in a country where your native language is spoken or in one where a different language is used can significantly impact your academic experience, cultural immersion, and language proficiency development. Fortunately, English is widely used as a second language in many countries around the world, making it a luxury for English speakers as we can often rely on locals’ language skills to communicate.

However, learning a local language before visiting a country is a respectful and culturally competent approach. It enables effective communication, fosters understanding of the local culture, and shows genuine interest and respect for the people and their heritage. By breaking down language barriers and engaging with locals on their terms, it promotes meaningful connections and enriches the travel experience.

When selecting a country where the language differs from your own, it is crucial to consider that colleges often require language proficiency exams for non-native speakers. Again, due to the popularity of English (mainly due to its connection to better economic outcomes), many colleges may offer degree programs in English.

For example, The American University of Paris is an American style university in Paris, France that operates fully in English. Then there is Universitat de Barcelona which offers select degree programs in English.

2. Ensure you do proper research on visa requirements

If you don’t apply for your student visa then you won’t be allowed to matriculate in your program or remain in your host country. Therefore, it is imperative to apply and accurately follow the steps to securing the appropriate visa.

Any small mistake can risk having your visa application denied. The good news is that your prospective university should provide detailed guidance. During this period, it is also beneficial to determine if you plan on remaining in the country post graduation. There are separate visa requirements for employment and these can be more difficult to obtain.

3. Discover what scholarships are available for those of your nationality

Many students going to college abroad will rely on scholarship funding. It’s important to know that there’s a better chance in finding a university that offers fully-funded scholarships in Eastern Europe, especially as an American.

However, there are global grants/scholarships that fund international education and research, such as the Rotary Global Grant. There is no limit on where you can study (unless restricted by the State Department) but certain regions provide more funding opportunities.

As an American, if you opt to choose federal loans as your main funding option then you need to ensure your institution is approved by the Department of Education. Universities also provide their own scholarships where students are automatically considered once they submit their program application, or an additional application may be needed.

4. Properly plan your accommodation

For me, finding accommodation was the greatest task. I knew that student accommodation would be more expensive but dependable and safe.

There are a few barriers when renting an apartment as an international student. Some countries require a guarantor, credit history, or a hefty deposit. Most importantly, you should never sign anything without seeing the space in person.

A lot of students don’t have the resources to arrive in their host country ahead of time and view apartments. Therefore, student accommodation is the most convenient option as you know what you are getting and you aren’t transferring money to an individual renter.

5. Familiarize yourself with the healthcare system

As you know, student health plans in America are not the most comprehensive and often still require some type of insurance which most obtain through their parent(s). Luckily, in European countries and the UK, there is a nationalized healthcare system which provides residents with free healthcare.

As an international student in the UK, you pay a one-time health surcharge fee when applying for your visa, that allows you access to health services. It is also important to receive any necessary vaccinations as health requirements vary by country. You most likely will need to engage with the healthcare system while in your host country so be sure to understand what options are available.

6. Connect with alumni, current, or incoming students

I find it incredibly important to connect with alumni, current, or incoming students before beginning your program. It can provide you valuable insights on what to expect academically, personally, and culturally.

Facebook is a great resource for connecting with those associated with your program or university. There are normally groups dedicated for incoming students for your respective year. This is an overlooked step and important advice for going to college abroad. Don’t be afraid to reach out and make connections!
