The Great Migration in the Masai Mara Game Park is one of the most spectacular wildlife events on the planet. Each year, over 1.5 million wildebeest, accompanied by hundreds of thousands of zebras and gazelles, journey from the Serengeti in Tanzania to the Masai Mara in Kenya. This migration, driven by the seasonal rains, sees these animals traverse vast distances in search of fresh grazing grounds and water. The spectacle is renowned for dramatic river crossings, particularly of the Mara River, where predators such as crocodiles lie in wait. This natural wonder not only highlights the incredible resilience and instinct of these species but also showcases the rich biodiversity of East Africa.

While Kenya boasts beautiful landscapes, it has a complicated past and a natural psyche. This coastal region is awash with luxurious beaches, wild animals, national parks, and lake fishing. You’ll find yourself in the county of Kisumu, right next to Lake Victoria, in the small town of Muhoroni where you’ll experience the kindness of the Kenyans. Kenya is stepping into the future. You can help with this process by volunteering in one of the many projects available in the town of Muhoroni, which lies 30 kilometers to the east of Kisumu city. It is mostly inhabited by the Luo tribe with a population of around 120,000 people almost entirely depending on subsistence farming (though there are three sugar factories). The people of Muhoroni are always warm and welcoming, and the smiles on their faces tell it all. Muhoroni has warm weather of about 25 Celsius all year round. As a volunteer, you will have the excitement to gain an even deeper understanding and appreciation of a foreign land and culture through humanitarian service, language and intercultural training, and exploration.

Enjoy a scenic journey with the 5-day Mount Kenya trek, which takes you through the Sirimon route and descends the magnificent Chogoria route. The Sirimon route is 15 km northeast of Nanyuki and has the most gradual incline among the three main routes heading to the peak, making it suitable for acclimatization. It only has a few steep areas; hence, it is considered the least challenging route. Chogoria is arguably the most scenic route. It has incredible features such as the spectacular Temple cliffs, the breathtaking Lake Ellis with amazing views of Mugi hills, the Giant's Billiards table, Lake Michaelson, Nithi Falls, and Gorges Valley. Join this incredible hike and discover the region's unique landscapes. The best time to climb Mount Kenya is during the dry months of January, February, late August, September, and October. Mount Kenya is a circular, large symmetrical volcano cone with a base diameter of about 12 km. It has three peaks: Batian (5,199 m), Nelion (5,188m), and Point Lenana (4,985m).

A Guide to Adventure Travel in Kenya
Locations
From dynamic and overwhelming cities to life-changing and serene natural parks, the things to do in Kenya are unstoppable. Named after the second-tallest mountain on the continent, Mt. Kenya, the country is essentially synonymous with adventure. Now the tough part — how to plan adventures in Kenya that takes you to all of its peaks, valleys, and savannahs!
The capital of Nairobi and oldest city of Mombasa are adventures in themselves, full of diverse populations and vibrant histories at the crossroads of African and Arab cultures. While it’s wise to be wary in these bustling urban centers, starting Kenyan trips with a stay or volunteer program here will provide an understanding of modern Kenya and a fascinating contrast to your voyages into the less (human) populated regions in the countryside beyond.
For those whose passions lie in the outdoors and with animals that they can now see outside of the zoo, there is no better place for adventure than the Maasai Mara National Reserve. Known for the Great Migration of animals to and from Tanzania’s Serengeti, this protected area is the prime place for a Kenya safari alongside zebras, gazelles, wildebeest, and hippos. At the center of conservation efforts, this national park and its surreal surroundings that stretch as far as the eye can see will welcome you to engage with local efforts to preserve the savannah and its inhabitants.
Farther east along the border, trips to Kenya are incomplete without visiting Amboseli National Park, which offers a different look at Kenyan wildlife with its protection of expansive elephant herds. Against the backdrop of Mt. Kilimanjaro, the Maasai people have lived here for centuries alongside other wildlife, like lions and cheetahs. An adventure further inland will lead you to the smaller city of Nakuru and the surrounding Great Rift Valley. Here you’ll take a journey beneath hundreds of protected bird species and alongside a sea of pink flamingos amidst the beauty of the protected nearby lake.
